With the intention of inserting the Azulão-Jaguatirica thermoelectric complex in energy auctions, Eneva intends to add a gigawatt of thermoelectric power generation in the state of Amazonas
Eneva SA, a Brazilian energy company that permeates the sectors of generation, exploration and production of oil and natural gas and commercialization of electricity, has not given up its intention to found a 600 megawatt thermoelectric plant in Manaus, in the state of Amazonas, even though negotiations with Petrobras about the Urucu Complex have not gone well. However, due to other priorities, the pace of the project had to be slowed down, according to information from New Business Director Marcelo Lopes, provided during the Eneva Investor Day event.

Eneva's New Business Director also stated that even the acquisition of the Urucu Complex (Amazonas) could be called into question in the future, if Petrobras decides to restart the negotiation process for a more appropriate amount. According to Lopes' statement at the virtual event, the Polo de Urucu remains as a possibility of purchase for the company, due to a matter of changing priorities.
According to the original article on the Broadcast portal about the thermoelectric plant in Amazonas, which you can check by clicking here, the company Eneva itself stated that negotiations with the state-owned oil company in Brazil did not work out due to the excessive increase in the price of a barrel of oil and the increase in its own reserves.
According to Marcelo Lopes, in Amazonas and throughout the North region, what Eneva has prioritized is the monetization of the Azulão-Jaguatirica proposal, which replicates the Reservoir-to-Widare (R2W) system that is already used by the company, with thermoelectric plants founded close to gas production, and Juruá, which, in turn, is located in the Solimões Basin, also in Amazonas, where it purchased seven blocks in 2020.
“I believe in the potential of the North region and in our belief that the thermoelectric generation market, that is, the demand for thermoelectric generation in the interconnected system, will be one of the main destinations for gas in the region”, commented Lopes. “We already monetized Azulão 1 in the first capacity auction that took place last year, we really liked this auction model because it brings a very interesting reservoir management capacity”, he stressed.
In addition, still according to Lopes' statement, the estimate is that the Azulão-Jaguatirica thermoelectric complex will be one of the participants in energy auctions in 2022 and next year, 2023.
In time, Eneva's Director of Operations Lino Cançado highlights: “The water park in the north of Brazil is running out of water, it will always need thermoelectric plants, in addition to the intermittency of renewables. Even if in Boa Vista it is interconnected to the SIN, there will still be issues to balance (the energy supply) at the end.”
Eneva starts commercial production in the Azulão field, in the Amazon Basin
Today, Monday (27/09), Eneva started commercial production in the Azulão field, located in the Amazon Basin. It is the first project to start operating in the region, 20 years after its discovery. According to the epbr website, the natural gas produced by Eneva in the Azulão field, located in the Amazon Basin, will be used in the generation of energy by the thermoelectric plant (UTE) Jaguatirica II.
