Jetour, Chery’s Off-Road SUV Division, Prepares Factory in Ceará to Assemble 4×4 SUVs Like the Jetour T1 and Enter Direct Competition with GWM’s Tank Line in Brazil.

Jetour, Chery’s off-road SUV division, is preparing to structure production in Ceará focusing on 4×4 models, positioning the brand as a new player in the segment of robust sport utility vehicles more technically oriented for off-road use, in a market today pressured by the presence of GWM’s Tank line in Brazil. With installation planned for the municipality of Horizonte and initial operation on an SKD basis, Jetour is expected to combine local assembly with component imports, paving the way for greater localization as volume and demand justify additional investments.

In parallel, Jetour’s move occurs in the context of accelerated expansion of Chinese manufacturers in the country, with shared plants, electric and hybrid platforms, and focus on mid and large SUVs. The same unit in Horizonte is indicated to localize the Chevrolet Spark EUV, creating an emerging automotive hub in Ceará and consolidating the state as a logistical gateway for projects aimed at the Brazilian market and, potentially, the supply to other Latin American countries in a second stage of industrial development.

Jetour as Chery’s Off-Road Division and Positioning in Brazil

Jetour will have a factory in Ceará to produce 4x4 SUVs, launch the Jetour T1, and compete with GWM's Tank line in the Brazilian market.

Jetour is born under Chery’s umbrella with a clear proposal: to act as a more “authentic” SUV brand, focusing on mid and large 4×2 and 4×4 models, capable of facing more severe usage conditions than a conventional urban utility vehicle.

By bringing Jetour to Brazil with a manufacturing structure in Ceará, Chery signals that it does not intend to operate only in the urban crossover segment, but to compete directly in the niche of strong image off-road vehicles, currently occupied by products from other Chinese brands and traditional global manufacturers.

The official launch of Jetour in the country is expected at an event in São Paulo, where the first models, the introduction schedule, and the commercial strategy will be detailed.

Although the formal confirmation of local assembly is awaited for later announcements, the choice of Horizonte as a production base indicates a broader long-term plan than just importing ready vehicles, especially in a volatile exchange scenario and the need for greater local content to gain competitiveness.

Factory in Horizonte and Operation on SKD System

Jetour will have a factory in Ceará to produce 4x4 SUVs, launch the Jetour T1, and compete with GWM's Tank line in the Brazilian market.

Jetour’s installation in Horizonte is expected to follow the SKD model, where vehicles arrive disassembled from China and are finalized on the local line.

This format allows for quicker production start-up, reduces logistical costs compared to fully assembled imports, and gradually prepares the ground for potential localization of components, should volume and industrial policy favor such evolution.

The fact that the same plant is linked to the localization of an electric model like the Spark EUV reinforces Ceará’s role as a flexible assembly base, capable of accommodating different projects on demand.

For Jetour, the SKD system offers the advantage of quickly introducing its range of 4×4 SUVs to Brazil while assessing market response, adjusting its portfolio, and calibrating future investments in tools, regional suppliers, and production lines more integrated into the local chain.

Jetour SUV Portfolio Considered for the Brazilian Market

Among the models mentioned on Jetour’s radar for Brazil are different sizes and configurations.

The Jetour G700 is the top-of-the-line model, a large SUV measuring about 5.2 meters in length and nearly 2.9 meters in wheelbase, designed to deliver ample space and a high-prestige image.

This profile places it close to larger utilities, in a range where the brand could compete with consumers currently looking at models like the Haval H9, positioned with a diesel engine in other areas of the market.

Below it, the Jetour T1 and T2 SUVs stand out as more likely options for an initial phase of operation in the country.

The T1, measuring approximately 4.7 meters in length and 2.8 meters in wheelbase, has proportions suitable for the Brazilian consumer’s taste for mid SUVs.

The T2, slightly larger, reaches about 4.78 meters, allowing for a more generous internal space and an even more robust visual.

In both, the combination of 1.5 and 2.0 turbo engines creates different performance levels, focusing on torque for use on highways and light trails.

Highlight for the Jetour T2 i-DM and the Electrification Strategy

One of the most technically relevant models in the range is the Jetour T2 i-DM, a plug-in hybrid that combines a 1.5 turbo gasoline engine with 156 hp, a dedicated automatic transmission, and a dual-motor electric system, totaling about 165 kW of combined power, equivalent to approximately 225 hp, and torque of 390 Nm.

This setup positions the T2 i-DM in a competitive performance range while aligning Jetour with the trend of progressive electrification in the mid-SUV segment.

The presence of a plug-in hybrid with three motors highlights that Jetour’s strategy is not limited to traditional off-road use but includes energy efficiency solutions and extended range in mixed cycles.

In the Brazilian context, a product with this architecture could serve both those seeking everyday driving with lower consumption and those interested in off-road incursions, taking advantage of the immediate torque from electric motors in low-speed situations and more demanding terrains.

Jetour T1 as Likely Entry Point to Brazil

In the discussion about which model should debut the commercial operation and, eventually, the SKD assembly in Ceará, the Jetour T1 emerges as a natural candidate.

In its 1.5 turbo configuration, the model offers about 135 hp and 290 Nm of torque, with a 7-speed DCT transmission and 4×2 traction, suitable for urban and highway use on regular pavement.

The 2.0 turbo version raises the level, with about 187 hp, 390 Nm of torque, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and 4×4 traction, bringing the T1 closer to a more genuinely off-road profile.

This ability to offer the same model in 4×2 and 4×4 configurations creates an interesting product ladder for Jetour in Brazil, allowing different price points and distinct audiences within the same body project.

From a manufacturing perspective, working with a modular product in this sense can simplify operations in Horizonte, concentrating efforts on a main model while gradually expanding the portfolio.

Direct Competition with GWM’s Tank Line

Jetour’s philosophy within Chery has clear parallels with the Tank brand within the GWM ecosystem. Both operate as divisions focused on robust SUVs, with off-road capability, powerful engines, and, in some cases, advanced hybrid solutions.

In Brazil, this means that Jetour’s entry with production in Ceará tends to create direct competition with the Tank 300 and other 4×4 models from the Chinese rival, especially in the price and size ranges where consumers seek a combination of comfort, technology, and performance on trails.

The Tank 300, for example, is a plug-in hybrid imported with a length of around 4.76 meters and power close to 394 hp, reflecting how competition operates at elevated performance levels.

By aligning the Jetour T2 i-DM and stronger versions of the T1 to this scenario, Jetour attempts to position its SUVs as similarly proposed alternatives, but produced or mounted on national territory, an argument that can gain weight in themes like availability, delivery times, and after-sales structure.

Role of Ceará in Chinese Automotive Strategy in Brazil

The choice of Ceará as an operation base for Jetour reinforces the movement of decentralization of the automotive industry, historically concentrated in states of the Southeast and South.

By establishing a structure in Horizonte, projects linked to Jetour and other models assembled in the region benefit from logistical advantages of proximity to ports, access to international routes, and the capability to serve both North and Northeast as well as external markets via maritime routes.

For the local economy, the presence of a brand like Jetour tends to generate chain effects, going beyond vehicle assembly.

Parts suppliers, logistics companies, engineering services, and skilled labor can be gradually attracted to the plant’s surroundings.

Even in an initial phase operating on SKD, the mere fact that Jetour plans to produce in Ceará signals new opportunities for professional qualification and diversification of the state’s industrial base.

What to Watch for in Jetour’s Upcoming Announcements

Jetour’s next steps should clarify crucial points for a complete understanding of the operation.

Among these are the official confirmation of the start of assembly in Horizonte, the definition of the mix of models and versions that will be offered to the Brazilian public, and the timeline for advancing from SKD operations to higher levels of localization.

Another important aspect will be the pricing strategy and positioning against direct rivals, such as GWM’s Tank line and other mid and large SUVs focused on robustness and technology.

It will also be relevant to monitor how Jetour intends to structure its dealership network, technical assistance, and parts supply, as the reliability perception of a new manufacturer largely hinges on the after-sales experience.

In the case of plug-in hybrid models like the T2 i-DM, clarity regarding the warranty for electric components, maintenance availability, and software updates will provide an additional competitive edge in the segment.

Jetour Changes the Game in Off-Road with Production in Ceará?

Jetour’s decision to prepare production of 4×4 SUVs in Ceará introduces another major competitor in the struggle for the off-road segment and for consumers seeking mid and large sport utility vehicles with genuine off-road capability.

The combination of SKD operation, a portfolio featuring models like the T1, T2, and G700, and the presence of plug-in hybrid options aligns the brand with the main technical trends in the market and increases the competitive density with GWM’s Tank line and other established rivals.

From an industrial and regional perspective, Jetour’s arrival reinforces the role of the Northeast in the new geography of the automotive industry linked to Chinese manufacturers while providing the Brazilian consumer with more product alternatives focused on robustness, technology, and different levels of electrification.

Given this scenario, the question remains for you who follow the sector: does Jetour’s entry with a factory in Ceará have the potential to change your perception of Chinese off-road SUVs in Brazil, or do you still see more risks than opportunities in this new competitor to GWM’s Tank line?
