Klabin's railway terminal, in the state of Paraná, is capable of transporting 125 thousand tons of paper and pulp in containers per month
Last Wednesday, September 15, Klabin inaugurated a rail container terminal next to one of its factories, Puma, in Ortigueira, in the Campos Gerais region, in the state of Paraná. The boarding pavilion is connected by rail to the Port of Paranaguá, from where the pulp and paper manufacturer exports a good part of its production, in a project described by the company as “the largest in volume transport capacity for a single company in the world ”. Details of Klabin's railway terminal in Paraná
The railway terminal is capable of transporting 125 tons of paper and cellulose in containers per month. This volume comes from Klabin's production at the Puma units (which are experiencing a multi-billion dollar expansion), in Ortigueira, and at Monte Alegre, in Telêmaco Borba. The investment in this modal was R$ 300 million.
The terminal, handling and shipment of cargo will be operated by the company TCP, which also manages the Container Terminal in Paranaguá. According to her, Klabin's yard has the capacity to store 2 containers, specialized equipment for moving the units and three internal railway lines with capacity for up to 90 wagons each.

In addition, its distribution potential through the railway line reduces traffic on the highways, increases Klabin's operational efficiency in Paraná and collaborates with sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions.
The project was designed based on the branch built at the Puma Unit, inaugurated in 2016 and until then the largest private investment in the history of Paraná, with R$ 8,5 billion, which doubled Klabin's production capacity in three years. In 2021, with the new investment of BRL 12,9 billion in the Puma II Project, the Company is acquiring four more locomotives and 460 wagons to transport the additional volume generated by the new plant. To put them into operation, the branch underwent an expansion, the construction of a trench on PR-340, which connects Telêmaco Borba to Ortigueira, contemplating, in addition to transporting pulp by rail, the transport of paper.

In a material fact released on 30/08, Klabin started operations in the first stage of the Puma II project, at the industrial unit in the city of Ortigueira, in the state of Paraná. The first stage of the project included the construction of a main fiber line for the production of unbleached pulp integrated to a kraftliner and white kraftliner paper machine (white top liner) with a capacity of 450 thousand tons per year.
Parallel to the start of operation of MP27, the works for the construction of the second paper machine of the Puma II Project, in Paraná, which has its start-up scheduled for 2023, have already started and follow all the safety and hygiene protocols required for the period. MP28 will focus on the production of paperboard, with a production capacity of 460 thousand tons per year and consolidates Klabin as a global producer of paperboard.
The decision for the paperboard machine was announced in May of this year and considers a thorough assessment of trends, opportunities and market conditions. “The sector is in a prosperous moment and we believe that it will remain heated in the coming years, driven by the search for more sustainability. The card provides good possibilities for our business, which is integrated, diversified and flexible. It also allows the association with barriers, which grow strongly as an alternative to single-use plastic packaging”, says Flávio Deganutti, director of Paper at Klabin.
