EAS and Vard Promar in crisis
lack of orders and layoffs in PE

Shipyards in Pernambuco are without works and are reducing their staff, prospects are of few orders in the coming years

The recent defeat of the Vard Promar Shipyard in Pernambuco (it was the construction yard of the “FLV” Consortium formed by the Italians Ficantieri and Leonardo Shipyard), worsened the situation of the shipbuilding industry in the state.
The lack of orders from Estaleiro Atlântico Sul (EAS) further helps to form chaos in the sector and there are even risks of closing the shipyards, which is causing serious concerns in the Pernambuco Metallurgist Union (Sindmetal-PE).

According to the president of Sindmetal-PE, Henrique Gomes, last week there were at least 40 layoffs in the South Atlantic (EAS) and another 900 may occur between the end of May and the beginning of June.

The trade unionist reinforces that Vard Promar and Atlântico Sul (EAS) have already employed around 12,7 jobs when they were at full steam. It is worth remembering that last week EAS delivered the oil tanker "Garrincha", the penultimate ship of Promef, and that this scenario should worsen after the delivery of the last one, the “portinari” oil tanker

In the heyday of shipbuilding in Pernambuco, EAS alone had 11 employees in 2011, while Vard Promar had 1,7 workers between 2015 and 2016.
Nowadays, EAS has 1,2 people working and Vard Promar only 90, but if the dismissals are confirmed, EAS should have only 125 employees.

EAS is negotiating the construction of two container ships and if the contract comes to fruition, there may be new hires in December.

The lack of orders to shipyards has an impact on the entire chain of suppliers and the creation of indirect jobs and according to the acting president of the Federation of Industries of the State of Pernambuco (FIEPE), Alexandre Valença, the federal government makes many demands on local companies that have to meet many requirements to be suppliers in the sector and this has increased the cost of production.
He even had to close a company that supplied 1,2 tons of sub-blocks to EAS, causing the dismissal of 200 people.

Regarding the Vard Promar, the company's president, Guilherme Coelho, declared that the Italian company Ficantieri, owner of the Brazilian shipyard, which even having lost the competition for the construction of the corvettes, will remain in Brazil, including keeping an eye on a future bid by the Navy to build an Antarctic vessel.

Experts guarantee that the crisis in shipbuilding is worldwide, as even China and South Korea are closing shipyards, but that in Brazil it is being worse due to the political and economic crisis and that it has always been a high risk to depend on orders only from Petrobras.
