Equinor will install an FPSO in the area of exploratory block BM-C-33, in the Campos Basin pre-salt. Jobs and economic injection in the city can be one of the benefits for the city

Good news, many job vacancies are coming in Macaé! Equinor and license partners Repsol Sinopec Brasil and Petrobras have approved the development concept for BM-C-33, a gas/condensate field located in the pre-salt of the Campos Basin in Brazil. Equinor will install an FPSO with capacity to produce 16 million m3/day in the Pão de Açúcar discovery project, in the area of exploratory block BM-C-33, in the pre-salt of the Campos Basin. The Norwegian has already estimated that the first gas could be produced, depending on other factors, from 2026.

“The BM-C-33 is a key project in our portfolio and the concept selection is a relevant milestone in our effort to mature the project. It is important to optimize and further improve the business case for the project to make it more robust for the future market,” said Geir Tungesvik, Senior Vice President Projects at Equinor.

Three pre-salt discoveries were made in the block: Seat (2010), Gávea (2011) and a large discovery of gas and condensate in the Pão de Açúcar prospect, announced in 2012, where an estimated 1 billion barrels of oil are estimated.

Streams from the wells will be sent to a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit located in the field. Both the gas and the oil/condensate will be processed in the FPSO, and the gas will be offloaded, already meeting the sales specifications. Crude oil will be unloaded by shuttle tankers and sold on the international market after ship-to-ship transfer. A new hull was selected to support 30 years of field life.

The FPSO will be connected by Equinor to the Cabiúnas Terminal, in Macaé

The gas flow solution is based on an offshore gas pipeline from the FPSO to a new dedicated gas receiving facility, onshore, inside Petrobras' TECAB terminal, in Cabiúnas, before connecting to the national gas transport network.

“The BM-C-33 contains substantial volumes of gas. Completion of the ongoing liberalization of the natural gas market in Brazil, according to the current plan, is critical for the further development of the project. BM-C-33 is an asset that has the potential to generate value for society, both through the creation of direct and indirect jobs, and the consequent cascading effect, and through the additional supply of gas that can contribute to industrial growth, as has already happened in other countries”, says Veronica Coelho, president of Equinor in Brazil.

The gas export capacity is planned for 16 Mm3/day (millions of cubic meters per day), with an average flow volume estimated at 14 Mm3/day, which represents a significant volume based on the current demand of the gas market in the Brazil. The daily oil processing capacity is 20.000 m3.

Concept selection is the completion of the technical and commercial evaluation of various development concepts and landing options. The chosen concept provides the most robust solution to develop the BM-C-33 project and the gas value chain.

Details on the project's timeline for the next decision windows and production start have not yet been finalized.

Equinor has operated the BM-C-33 area, where it has a 35% stake, since December 2016. The company's partners in the project are Repsol (35%) and Petrobras (30%).
