Equinor Will Install an FPSO in the BM-C-33 Exploratory Block Area in the Pre-Salt Campos Basin. Jobs and Economic Injection in the City Could Be Some of the Benefits for the City
Good news, many job openings are coming to Macaé! Equinor and its license partners Repsol Sinopec Brasil and Petrobras have approved the development concept for BM-C-33, a gas/condensate field located in the pre-salt Campos Basin in Brazil. Equinor will install an FPSO with a capacity to produce 16 million m3/day in the Pão de Açúcar discovery project, in the BM-C-33 exploratory block area, in the pre-salt Campos Basin. The Norwegian company has estimated that the first gas could be produced, depending on other factors, starting in 2026.
“BM-C-33 is a key project in our portfolio and the selection of concept is a significant milestone in our effort to mature the project. It is important to optimize and further improve the business case for the project to make it more robust for the future market,” said Geir Tungesvik, Senior Vice President of Projects at Equinor.

Alert in the fuel market: Analysts and a former director of ANP warn that oil prices may worsen in the coming months due to global instability.
In the block, three discoveries have been made in the pre-salt: Seat (2010), Gávea (2011), and a significant discovery of gas and condensate in the Pão de Açúcar prospect, announced in 2012, where 1 billion barrels of equivalent is estimated.
The wellflows will be sent to a floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) unit located in the field. Both gas and oil/condensate will be processed at the FPSO, and the gas will be evacuated, already meeting sales specifications. Crude oil will be offloaded by shuttle tankers and marketed in the international market after ship-to-ship transfer. A new hull has been selected to last for 30 years of the field’s lifespan.
The FPSO Will Be Connected by Equinor to the Cabiúnas Terminal in Macaé
The gas evacuation solution is based on an offshore pipeline from the FPSO to a new dedicated gas receiving facility, onshore, within Petrobras’ TECAB terminal in Cabiúnas, before connecting to the national gas transportation network.
“BM-C-33 contains substantial volumes of gas. The ongoing liberalization of the natural gas market in Brazil, according to the current plan, is crucial for the further development of the project. BM-C-33 is an asset that has the potential to generate value for society, both through the creation of direct and indirect jobs, and the resulting ripple effect, as well as the additional gas supply that can contribute to industrial growth, as has already happened in other countries,” says Veronica Coelho, President of Equinor in Brazil.
The gas export capacity is planned for 16 Mm3/day (million cubic meters per day), with an estimated average evacuation volume of 14 Mm3/day, which represents a significant volume based on the current market demand for gas in Brazil. The daily oil processing capacity is 20,000 m3.
The concept selection concludes the technical and commercial evaluation of various development concepts and landfall options. The chosen concept provides the most robust solution for developing the BM-C-33 project and the gas value chain.
Details about the project schedule for the upcoming decision windows and production start have not yet been finalized.
Equinor has been operating the BM-C-33 area, where it has a 35% stake, since December 2016. The company has as partners in the project Repsol (35%) and Petrobras (30%).
