The Brazilian Oil and Gas Giant, Petrobras, Identified the Presence of Hydrocarbons in a Well in the Pre-Salt of the Santos Basin
Petrobras, Brazil’s oil giant, announced on May 17 an innovative discovery in an exploratory well located in the pre-salt region of the Santos Basin on the coast of São Paulo. This remarkable discovery confirms the presence of hydrocarbons, essential components that originate oil.
According to information from the state-owned company, well 3-BRSA-1387D-SPS is located 260 km from the city of Santos, at depths reaching 1,979 meters below the seabed. This drilling is in the pre-salt area, where vast reserves of oil and natural gas are located.
According to Petrobras, through electrical profiles and fluid samples collected during drilling activities, it was determined that there is an oil-bearing interval in the Aram block. These samples will be analyzed in the laboratory, providing essential data to assess the production potential and guide the next exploratory steps in this region.

Continuity of Operations and Importance of the Aram Block
The recent discovery in the Aram block follows another identification of hydrocarbons made by Petrobras in well 1-BRSA-1381-SPS, which is also in this block, approximately 240 km from the city of Santos. These consecutive discoveries expand the prospects for the expansion of the oil field initially found in this pioneering well.
The consortium formed by Petrobras and CNPC will continue operations aiming to complete the drilling project of the well to the established depth, as well as characterizing the conditions of the reservoirs found. The Aram block holds strategic value for exploring the remaining potential of the pre-salt, especially in the Santos Basin. The excellent quality fluid found in the well reinforces the significance of this discovery and indicates low levels of contaminants.
The acquisition of the Aram block took place in March 2020 during the 6th bidding round held by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), under the Production Sharing regime, with Pré-Sal Petróleo.
What Are Hydrocarbons?
Hydrocarbons are organic compounds made up of carbon and hydrogen atoms, which can exist in liquid, solid, or gas form. They are found in fossil energy sources, such as oil and natural gas, as well as in renewable sources like biomass.
Oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, which vary in size, shape, and physical and chemical properties. The lighter and more volatile hydrocarbons form natural gas, while the heavier and more viscous ones form crude oil.
What Is the Importance of the Pre-Salt and the Santos Basin for Petrobras?
The pre-salt is a geological layer that extends for about 800 km along the Brazilian coast, between the states of Espírito Santo and Santa Catarina. It lies beneath a thick layer of salt, which can be up to 2 km thick.
The pre-salt contains large reserves of oil and natural gas, which may reach 176 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe), according to estimates by the ANP. These reserves represent significant potential to increase the national energy production and generate wealth for the country.
The Santos Basin is one of the main areas for oil and natural gas exploration by Petrobras. It is located off the coast of São Paulo and covers an area of about 352,500 km². The discovery of hydrocarbons in the exploratory well in the Santos Basin is yet another important step for Petrobras, which has been investing in technology and innovation to explore the region’s potential.
The Santos Basin is one of Petrobras’ main oil and natural gas exploration areas, and the discovery of well 3-BRSA-1387D-SPS could open new possibilities for the expansion of the field discovered in the pioneering well of the Aram block. The partnership with CNPC is strategic for Petrobras, which seeks to expand its presence in the international oil and gas market.
