Expansion of Electric Car Plant in Camaçari, Bahia, Reflects Growth in Demand in the Brazilian Market
The Chinese automaker BYD, which had already announced a significant investment in Brazil, is about to further increase its bet in the country. With the growing interest of the Brazilian market in electric and hybrid vehicles, the company decided to expand its original project in Bahia to a total of R$ 6.5 billion. The information was revealed by Senator Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), leader of the government in the Federal Senate, in an interview with radio Antena 1, indicating that an official announcement from BYD should occur soon, according to the website Insideevs.
Expansion of Investments Driven by Demand
The main motivator for this new investment is the increase in imports of BYD vehicles to Brazil, observed in recent months. This unexpected growth in sales led the automaker to revise its initial plans, which already anticipated the construction of an industrial plant in Camaçari, in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador. Now, BYD plans to expand the production capacity of its factory to meet a demand that seems to be even greater than initially projected.
The Camaçari plant, which will occupy an area of 330,000 square meters, was expected to generate around 10,000 direct and indirect jobs. With the increase in investment, this number is expected to grow significantly, establishing Bahia as an important center for electric and hybrid vehicle production in Brazil.

Bahia: The New Brazilian Silicon Valley?
In addition to increasing production capacity, BYD is committed to investing in new technologies in partnership with the government of Bahia. The region, which is already being nicknamed the “Bahian Silicon Valley,” could become a cutting-edge technological hub, focusing on the production of electric vehicles and the development of innovative solutions for the automotive industry.
The state secretary for Economic Development, Angelo Almeida (PSB), confirmed to Portal A Tarde that the production of the first BYD vehicles in Bahia is expected to start in 2025. According to him, the expansion of the project has already been internally approved by the company, and studies indicate the need to increase production capacity beyond what was initially planned.
“BYD is already a reality. In 2025, we should have cars on the market produced in Bahia. The news is that there is the possibility of expanding the already announced project that is underway. In other words: within the company, this plant in Bahia is approved, and based on studies that have been conducted, everything indicates that they will have to increase production capacity beyond what was projected. This is a good sign,” Almeida stated.
