China Inaugurates Port In Neighboring Country of Brazil With Billion-Dollar Investments. Chinese Megaport Promises To Revolutionize Latin American Countries. Learn About The Benefits Of China’s New Port In Peru.

During his recent visit to Peru, China’s President Xi Jinping launched operations at the future Chancay Port Complex, an ambitious project that promises to be the largest commercial port in South America. Located at a strategic point on the Peruvian coast, the megaport is a flagship initiative within the New Silk Road, consolidating China’s influence on global trade. With the capacity to handle millions of tons of cargo annually, the project is expected to transform the logistical and commercial landscape of the region, including direct impacts for Brazil. Check out the details of the Chancay Port Complex, its strategic importance, and how it may redefine trade relations between Latin America, China, and other global markets.

China Inaugurates Port In Neighboring Country Of Brazil With Investments Of R$ 19.7 Billion

The new Chinese port in Peru is located about 70 km north of the Peruvian capital, Lima. It is a superlative project, led by the Chinese state shipping company Cosco Shipping Company with total investments estimated at US$ 3.4 billion, equivalent to R$ 19.7 billion.

The Chinese megaport is expected to feature 15 docks, offices, logistics services, and a 2 km-long tunnel for cargo transport. Eight years after the start of construction, the completion of the first phase of the complex was announced in November, during Xi’s visit to Peru to attend the APEC summit held in Lima.

China inaugurates a port in the neighboring country of Brazil, taking an important step towards expanding its presence in Latin America. It was conceived as part of the New Silk Road, a strategic initiative that has been implemented for years and aims to increase Chinese presence and influence in the world.

With the new Chinese port in Peru, the country increases its capacity to unload goods in South America and transport imported products from the region, primarily minerals like lithium and copper, as well as agricultural products like soybeans.

Chinese Megaport Promises To Generate 7,500 Direct And Indirect Jobs

The Minister of Communications and Transport of Peru, Raúl Pérez Reyes, stated that the Chinese megaport will allow his country to position itself “as a logistical hub for all of Latin America.”

The Peruvian government estimates that the enterprise will create 7,500 direct and indirect jobs, a number that critics view with skepticism, arguing that in other projects in Latin America, Chinese investments employed more workers brought in from China than local labor.

China inaugurates a port in the neighboring country of Brazil, and there is an expectation that it will bring a reduction in the transportation time of goods and, consequently, in freight costs, making it attractive for logistics operators. The government’s estimate is that the duration of cargo ship trips from Peru to Asia would decrease from 40 to 28 days. The main reason is the chosen location for the port.

Impact Of China’s New Port In Peru For Brazil

Like Peru, Brazil is another country with increasingly close political and commercial relations with China. The Asian giant is Brazil’s main trading partner, and the Brazilian government has shown interest in the Chinese megaport.

The Minister of Planning and Budget, Simone Tebet, visited Peru in March. According to the official Peruvian statement, the purpose of the visit was to learn about Peru’s plans and strategies to boost South American integration routes.

Leonino Dourado, from the Center for Studies on China and Asia at the University of the Pacific in Lima, told BBC News Mundo that both governments and the company indicate that Chancay is also expected to become a transportation hub for Brazilian exports.
