By Including False Information in Your Resume You Could Be Burning Bridges in the Job Market, Besides Being Fired for Just Cause.
When it comes to trying to land the desired job, some professionals include exaggerated or even false information (that is, lying on their resume) in their work histories. Such behavior can not only disqualify the candidate but also ruin their career. HR departments quickly uncover the ruse, and the professional may end up “burned” in the job market.

Fake Certificates
Incredibly, there are professionals who even use fake certificates, such as those for high school completion. It’s worth noting that this action is, in fact, a crime under Brazilian law. In these cases, the company may choose to dismiss the employee for just cause. Such judicial decisions are generally irreversible. A case was recorded in Hortolândia-SP.

The worst part is not losing the job, but rather ending one’s professional career since this information can be shared throughout the job market, making it difficult or even impossible to be reemployed. In the city of Campinas-SP, an employee with over 10 years at the company was fired for just cause. Reason? The company discovered that his high school diploma was fake. This is considered a “very serious” offense, commented the judge of the Regional Labor Court of Campinas, Manoel S. F. Carradita.
In the years 2015 and 2016, in Espírito Santo, 11 teachers from the public school system were fired for just cause for presenting fake certificates and documents. The teachers submitted falsified graduate certificates to gain access to public employment. All 11 were sued and had to repay the bonuses received for their educational level. Moreover, all were barred from holding any public office for 5 years.

Up to 6 Years of Imprisonment
According to Brazilian Penal Code, those who falsify certificates, such as course completion certificates, can face 2 to 6 years of imprisonment and fines (Article 304 of the Penal Code).
To better understand what it is and how it works:
- CRIME: Configured by the use and/or falsification of documents. The prison time varies based on the severity;
- Where in the Brazilian Penal Code? Articles 297 to 301, Decree Law 2848 (Dec 7, 1940);
- Where in the CLT? Article 482.
- Penalty: 2 to 6 years and fines (public documents), 1 to 5 years and fines (private documents).
Trust Erosion
Labor judges have been fully supportive of companies that dismiss their employees for just cause in these cases. This constitutes a breach of trust between employee and employer. Characterized by law as “improbity,” it is a way to gain unlawful advantages, which undermines the trust pact in the contractual relationship. Many candidates resort to these tactics to secure employment, but discovering the lie could lead to irretrievable damage to their professional life.
The Best Option
Never include information that does not match your qualifications or experiences on your resume. Remember: honesty is your calling card for establishing a trust link between you and the company. Once this link is broken, it will be nearly impossible to restore it for the rest of your life. Be honest and transparent. Present and only say what you truly are and can offer to the company. Throughout your journey, you will have the opportunity for growth and to create a strong bond of trust with your job, thus ensuring your success throughout your career.
