With Billion-Dollar Investment, BH Metro Receives New Fleet to Modernize Public Transport and Accelerate Line 2 Works.
The BH Metro officially presented, on Thursday (5), the first set of new trains that will enhance the public transport of the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte.
The vehicle was then showcased in the maintenance yard located in the São Gabriel neighborhood, in the northeastern part of the state capital.
The expectation is that passenger operations will begin within three months, after the completion of technical and safety tests.

The delivery marks the start of a batch of 24 units acquired to modernize the system and expand urban mobility.
Thus, the initiative addresses the growing demand for rapid transport in light of increasing traffic in the RMBH.
Additionally, the equipment will also operate in the future on the Line 2, which is currently under expansion.
Authorities Participate in Official Presentation
The ceremony was attended by Governor Romeu Zema and Vice-Governor Mateus Simões.
The event symbolized a significant advancement within the restructuring project of public transport on rails in Minas Gerais.
During the speech, Zema highlighted the fleet renewal after a long period without acquisitions.
“It has been more than 15 years since new units were delivered.
Now, metro users will have comfortable equipment.
Those who follow the RMBH know how traffic has worsened in recent times, and we want the metro to be a great option.
In fact, we are studying to ensure that these expansions are not limited to the planned stations.”
This statement reinforces the strategic role of BH Metro in the state’s urban mobility policy.
Billion-Dollar Investments Drive Urban Mobility
The purchase of the new trains is part of the concession contract overseen by the State Secretary of Infrastructure, Mobility, and Partnerships (Seinfra).
The direct investment in the fleet is approximately R$ 700 million.
Of this total, R$ 440 million comes from a judicial settlement for the Brumadinho disaster, established in 2021 between the state government, Public Prosecutor’s Office, and Public Defender’s Office.
However, the full package of works related to BH Metro is even more robust.
The investments amount to around R$ 4 billion, encompassing:
Modernization of 19 stations;
Expansion of operational infrastructure;
Construction of Line 2;
Acquisition of additional fleet.
The majority of the funds come from the federal government, with around R$ 2.8 billion allocated to the project.
Expansion of Line 2 and Structural Improvements
The implementation of Line 2 is considered one of the most anticipated works of urban mobility in Minas Gerais.
The new branch is expected to expand the reach of public transport on rails, connecting strategic regions of Greater BH.
Additionally, operational improvements are planned to enhance comfort, frequency, and reliability of trips.
Thus, the modernization aims to make BH Metro more competitive against road transport.
Schedule Foresees Ten Trains in Operation by December
The commencement of operations will occur in a staggered manner.
Thus, the forecast is that ten units will be transporting passengers by the end of this year.
The operational planning indicates:
4 trains in circulation by July;
6 additional trains by December.
Before that, each set undergoes what is called commissioning — a phase that includes final assembly, dynamic tests, certifications, and safety validations.
Only after this phase will the new trains be released for commercial use in public transport.
New Station Reinforces BH Metro Network
As the fleet expands, the infrastructure is also progressing.
Thus, the Novo Eldorado station, on Line 1, in Contagem, is scheduled to open next week.
The official announcement is set for February 9.
Thus, the delivery integrates the package of structural improvements aimed at urban mobility and increasing the capacity of the system.
International Production and Delivery Logistics
The new trains of BH Metro are being manufactured by Changchun Railway Vehicles, a subsidiary of CRRC Corporation Limited — the largest rolling stock manufacturer in the world.
The production process was closely monitored by the state government. In June 2025, a delegation visited the factory during an official mission to Asia.
Subsequently:
The shipping occurred in October 2025, in the Chinese city of Qingdao;
The unloading took place in January 2026, at the Port of Itaguaí (RJ);
Then the unit went to Juiz de Fora before arriving in Belo Horizonte.
This international logistics highlights the scale of investment in urban mobility.
Public Transport Modernization Aims at Reducing Traffic
Thus, the fleet renewal and the expansion of Line 2 are part of a larger strategy to reduce traffic bottlenecks in the RMBH.
With more comfort, regularity, and capacity, BH Metro aims to attract new passengers and ease the flow of vehicles on the main metropolitan roads.
“It is a government that is reaping the benefits of serious work, austerity, and competent people, which is what we need in the public sector. All improvements will continue to be delivered in the coming years.
Thus, we have a lot planned and we already have reserved, in a current account for each project, the resources for deliveries,” Zema concluded.
Prospects for Urban Mobility in Greater BH
Therefore, the arrival of the new trains represents more than just fleet renewal.
The movement signals a structural transformation in public transport in the metropolitan area.
With billion-dollar investments, expansion of Line 2, and modernization of the stations, BH Metro establishes itself as the central axis of urban mobility in Minas Gerais for the coming years.
