New Venture of the Fluminense Company Will Generate 400 Direct Jobs in the Mining Municipality Through the Pedra Branca Project!
The municipality of João Monlevade, located in the state of Minas Gerais, is about to receive one of the largest investments of the last decade in the region. The Bemisa mining company, headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, announced that it will start, in the second half of 2025, the production of the Pedra Branca Project, aimed at the extraction of iron ore in this locality.
Details of the Pedra Branca Project
According to information released by Bemisa, the Pedra Branca Project involves an investment of R$100 million and the creation of 400 direct jobs in the municipality of João Monlevade.
The mining company is 100% installed in the Fazenda Sabaru, owned by businessman Caetano Martins da Costa, located in the region.

A Brazilian city gains a factory worth R$ 300 million with the capacity to process 200 thousand tons of wheat per year, a mill of 660 tons/day, silos for 42 thousand tons, and an industrial area of 276 thousand m².
The project’s exploration area covers 194.38 hectares, distributed among the municipalities of João Monlevade, Bela Vista de Minas, and Itabira.
This region is immediately west of the Andrade mine, operated by ArcelorMittal, one of the largest steel companies in the world.
Production Capacity and Employed Technology
According to Bemisa, the estimated capacity of the new mine is 130 million tons, including 33 million tons of high-quality ore, with an average content of 58.5% iron.
Operating at full capacity, the annual production of the Pedra Branca Project could reach 1.5 million tons.
An important feature of the project is the use of a mobile crushing and screening plant, which will process high-grade ores dry, without the need for dams to store tailings.
This technology avoids the risks of dam failures, such as those that occurred in Mariana and Brumadinho, tragedies that marked the recent history of mining in Brazil.
Expansion and Importance of Bemisa in the Mineral Sector
In addition to the Pedra Branca Project in Monlevade, Bemisa already operates the Baratinha Complex, located in the municipality of Antônio Dias, also in Minas Gerais.
Last year, the company was the 23rd largest payer of the Financial Compensation for Mineral Exploration (CFem) in Brazil, demonstrating its relevance in the sector.
Bemisa claims to have drilled more than 260 thousand meters in its projects, through various exploration campaigns, and achieved “significant advances in structuring its ventures” in different mineral substances, such as iron ore, gold, nickel, rare earths, copper, phosphate, and limestone.
Strategic Importance of the Project for Bemisa
The Pedra Branca Project represents an important opportunity for the expansion and consolidation of Bemisa’s position in the iron ore mining market in Brazil.
Upon reaching the maximum production capacity of 1.5 million tons annually, the company will be considered a “mid-sized producer” in this segment.
This new ore extraction and processing plant will significantly expand Bemisa’s total production capacity, which currently stands at around 5 million tons per year.
Furthermore, the project is located in a strategic area, close to other important mines operated by ArcelorMittal and major consumer centers.
Economic and Social Impact of the Mining Project in Monlevade
The Pedra Branca Project by Bemisa in Monlevade represents a significant investment of R$100 million and the creation of 400 direct jobs in the region, which will generate positive impacts on both the economy and the local job market.
This venture reinforces the mining company’s commitment to sustainable development in the mineral activity in Brazil.
In addition to direct benefits, the project is also expected to boost the city’s service and commerce sectors, generating jobs and income indirectly.
It is anticipated that the arrival of Bemisa will bring improvements to local infrastructure, such as investments in logistics, transportation, and sanitation, benefiting the entire population of João Monlevade.
Alignment of Mining with Sustainable Practices
An important aspect of the Pedra Branca Project is the adoption of more sustainable technologies for the extraction and processing of iron ore.
The use of a mobile crushing and screening plant in a dry process eliminates the need for tailings dams, minimizing environmental risks.
This approach aligns with the growing demands for more responsible practices in the mining industry, especially following the disasters in Mariana and Brumadinho, which highlighted the importance of investing in safer and more sustainable technological solutions.
Therefore, the arrival of this new project from Bemisa in Monlevade is very positive news for the city and the region, bringing not only investments and jobs but also more advanced and sustainable technologies for the extraction of iron ore, one of the country’s main mineral resources.
