The Government of Mozambique Revealed a New Discovery of Natural Gas in Inhambane, Strengthening the Country’s Potential in the Energy Sector. Although the Commercial Viability of the Reserve Still Needs to Be Assessed, the Findings Promise to Affect the National Economic Scenario and Place the Country at a New Export Level. However, Along with the Expectation of Wealth, Comes the Alert: the Discovery May Attract the Covetousness of “External Forces” Interested in the Valuable Mozambican Reserves.

After the Council of Ministers meeting in Maputo, spokesman Filimão Suaze stated that, just like other nations with strategic natural resource reserves, Mozambique also faces the risk of attracting external interests. He emphasized that, with the new discovery of natural gas in the PT5-C area, the country must prepare to protect and develop its resources.

“The risk that arises in any country that has resources being discovered beneath its soil is real,” commented Suaze, alerting about the experiences of other countries where the presence of important reserves has increased the interest of external forces. The spokesman also added that the government’s goal is to explore resources transparently and aimed at the well-being of the Mozambican population.

National Petroleum Institute Leads Evaluations of the New Natural Gas Discovery

The National Petroleum Institute (INP), the body responsible for managing Mozambique’s energy resources, disclosed details about the operation that led to the new discovery. Located in the onshore PT5-C area, in the Mozambique basin, the drilling was granted in 2018 to Sasol Petroleum Mozambique Exploration Limited (with a 70% stake) and the National Hydrocarbons Company (with 30%).

In the initial drilling, manifestations of natural gas were confirmed, leading to subsequent analyses that determined it to be a new reserve. Additional evaluations will follow to determine the extent of the reserve and its commercial viability, indicating whether it can be exploited on a large scale and significantly contribute to Mozambique’s economy.

Wealth and Security: The Two Sides of the Discovery

With the increasing number of natural gas projects, especially in the Rovuma basin, Mozambique positions itself as one of the main players in gas exportation in Africa. The reserves, some among the largest in the world, have already attracted billion-dollar investments and the presence of giants like TotalEnergies, which maintains operations in the region, although temporarily suspended due to security concerns.

While the new discovery of natural gas is a reason for celebration, the Mozambican government remains vigilant regarding security issues and possible external influences. Filimão Suaze’s message reflects the need for a balance between leveraging resources for economic development and protecting national sovereignty.

The National Petroleum Institute reaffirms its commitment to move forward with the next steps transparently and responsibly.
