Traffic Deaths in Piauí Reached 1,059 in 2025. More Than 72% of the Victims Without Driver’s License, According to Data from SSP and PRF Piauí.

Traffic deaths in the Piauí continue to be one of the main challenges for road safety in the state.

In 2025, 1,059 people lost their lives in traffic accidents, with more than 72% of the victims without a valid driver’s license.

The data was released by the Traffic Observatory of the Secretary of Public Safety of Piauí, which monitors occurrences throughout the state, including the capital Teresina.

The survey reveals who the victims are, when the accidents occur, and which factors contribute the most to these incidents.

Thus, a detailed analysis allows for the direction of public policies and enforcement actions, especially on federal highways, where the PRF Piauí operates more intensely.

Traffic Deaths in Piauí Remain at High Levels

Although the percentage of victims without a license has decreased compared to 2024, when 75.35% of deaths involved people without a driver’s license, the numbers are still considered high.

In 2025, the reduction was slight, keeping the state in a permanent alert about the risks associated with unlawful driving.

In Teresina, the state’s capital, 157 deaths were recorded throughout the year.

In the countryside, deaths were distributed among different municipalities, reinforcing that the problem is not limited to urban areas, but also affects state and federal roads.

Moreover, according to the Traffic Observatory of the Secretary of Public Safety of Piauí, the consolidated data helps identify patterns and critical periods for the occurrence of traffic accidents.

July Had the Highest Number of Fatal Accidents

The month of July was the deadliest on Piauí’s roads.

In total, 112 deaths were recorded throughout the state, with 22 occurring in Teresina alone.

The period coincides with school vacations and an increase in vehicle traffic, which requires extra attention from drivers.

In addition, the age profile of the victims is noteworthy.

About 21% of the people who died were between 35 and 44 years old, an economically active age range.

The survey also indicates 14 deaths of children aged 0 to 12 years, highlighting the social and familial impact of these accidents.

PRF Piauí Indicates Main Causes of Traffic Accidents

According to the Federal Highway Police, the main causes of traffic accidents on Piauí’s highways in 2025 were avoidable risk behaviors.

Among the most recurrent factors are:

Driving against traffic, with 33 reports;

Driver’s lack of reaction, in 31 occurrences;

Access to the road without the necessary precautions, totaling 17 cases.

These data reinforce the importance of education for traffic safety and continuous enforcement as pillars of road safety.

Decline in Hospital Attendance Indicates Advancement in Road Safety

Despite the high number of deaths, there was a reduction in hospital admissions related to accidents.

According to the Traffic Operations Department, attendances to victims with injuries at the Hospital de Urgência de Teresina (HUT) fell 17% in 2025.

At the Dirceu Arcoverde State Hospital (HEDA) in Parnaíba, the decline was even more significant, reaching 60%.

This data suggests that preventive and operational actions are beginning to take effect, even in a still concerning scenario.

Accidents Involving Animals on the Road Still Cause Deaths

Another critical factor for traffic deaths in Piauí is accidents involving loose animals on the highways. In 2025, PRF Piauí recorded 56 occurrences, with 21 considered serious.

These accidents resulted in four deaths and 61 people injured.

Thus, according to Fernando Aragão, Director of Traffic Operations at SSP-PI, the Closed Gate Operation helped reduce deaths related to this type of occurrence by 12%.

“Reinforcing the importance of holding owners accountable and the preventive removal of animals from the highways,” said the director.

Two-Year Balance Reinforces Alert for Victims Without Driver’s License

Between 2024 and 2025, 2,138 people lost their lives on the roads of Piauí.

The recurrence of victims without a driver’s license highlights the need to intensify educational campaigns, enforcement actions, and public policies aimed at regularizing drivers.

Experts point out that driving without a license significantly increases the risk of serious accidents, as it involves a lack of technical training and knowledge of basic traffic rules.

Road Safety Requires Continuous Effort

The numbers show that road safety in Piauí depends on integrated actions between the government, security forces, and society.

The actions of PRF Piauí, combined with state programs and driver awareness, are essential to reduce traffic deaths in Piauí in the coming years.

Meanwhile, the data serve as a clear warning: respecting traffic laws and driving responsibly saves lives.
