Did The Driver’s License Change? Is It Necessary To Take New Exams To Renew? The Truth Behind The News That Went Viral On The Internet! The National Traffic Council (Contran) And The National Secretariat Of Traffic (Senatran) Had To Reveal The Truth!

In Recent Months, Alarming Information Has Been Circulating On Social Media And Messaging Apps, Suggesting That, Starting This Year, Brazilian Drivers Would Be Required To Take New Theoretical And Practical Exams To Renew Their National Driver’s License (CNH).

These Rumors Generated Concern And Doubts Among Drivers Across The Country. However, After A Detailed Analysis, It Is Found That Such Claims Do Not Correspond To Reality.

The Ministry Of Transport And The National Secretariat Of Traffic (Senatran) Clarified That There Is No Change Expected In The Legislation Regarding The Renewal Of The CNH In 2025.

The Current Rules Remain The Same, Without The Introduction Of New Mandatory Exams For Drivers Needing To Renew Their License.

The Dissemination Of This False Information Has Caused Confusion And Unnecessary Anxiety Among Drivers.

Origin Of The Rumors And Official Denials

The Spread Of These False News Started In Mid-2024, When Messages Began To Circulate On Various Digital Platforms, Stating That New Requirements Would Be Implemented For The Renewal Of The CNH Starting In January 2025.

These Messages, Often Accompanied By Videos And Alleged Testimonials From Authorities, Claimed That Drivers Would Be Subjected To Additional Theoretical And Practical Exams Beyond The Existing Ones.

In Response To These Rumors, The National Secretary Of Traffic, Adrualdo Catão, Stated In November 2024 That There Is No New Rule About The CNH Set To Be Implemented.

Catão Emphasized That People Are Confusing Information, Believing It To Be A Law Already Enacted When In Reality It Is Just A Bill Being Processed In The National Congress.

Even If Approved, It Would Still Require Presidential Sanction To Come Into Effect.

Bill Under Review

The Confusion Seems To Be Related To Bill No. 7,746/2017, Authored By Federal Deputy Mariana Carvalho.

This Bill Proposes The Creation Of Two Categories Of Licenses: One Restricted To Vehicles With Automatic Transmission And Another Covering All Types Of Vehicles, Regardless Of The Type Of Transmission.

However, It Is Crucial To Highlight That This Bill Is Still Under Review In The Chamber Of Deputies And Has Not Been Approved Or Enacted. Therefore, It Does Not Impose Any Obligations On Drivers Until It Becomes Law.

Current Procedures For The Renewal Of The CNH

Currently, The Process Of Renewing The CNH In Brazil Follows The Guidelines Established By The Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB) And By Resolutions From The National Traffic Council (Contran).

The Requirements Include:

Physical And Mental Aptitude Exam: Assesses The Driver’s Health Conditions, Ensuring They Are Fit To Drive Safely.

Psychological Exam: Required Only For Drivers Who Engage In Paid Driving Activities, Such As Taxi Drivers And Bus Drivers.

Toxicological Exam: Mandatory For Category C, D, And E Drivers, According To A Decision Made By The Superior Court Of Justice (STJ) In 2022.

Validity Period Of The CNH: Variable Depending On The Driver’s Age:

  • 10 Years For Drivers Up To 49 Years;
  • 5 Years For Those Aged 50 To 69;
  • 3 Years For Drivers Aged 70 Or Older.

There Is No Requirement For New Theoretical Or Practical Exams For The Renewal Of The CNH.
