MPBA recommends to Inema and Voltalia Energia the suspension of the wind energy park in canudos, in Bahia. The fact occurred because the work is located in the only habitat of the Lear's Macaw, threatened with extinction

Last Monday (19), the Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of Bahia (MPBA) recommended to the company Voltalia Energia do Brasil and the Institute for the Environment and Water Resources of Bahia (Inema) to suspend the installation of the wind power park in municipality of Canudos. The suspension is due to the fact that the complex is located in the only habitat of the Lear's Macaw (Anodorhynchus leari) in Brazil.

Endangered Lear's Macaw

The species is considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). According to the last census, carried out in 2019, it is estimated that there are only 1.500 birds.

At the beginning of June, in addition to the fear of specialists that the 80 wind turbines could pose a risk of collision for the hyacinth macaws, there is still another problem. Voltalia Energia did not present any complete environmental licensing to obtain permission for works in Bahia.

A resolution by the National Council for the Environment (Conama) establishes as mandatory the Environmental Impact Study and Environmental Impact Report (EIA/Rima) and public hearings for wind power plants that are located in areas where endangered species occur, as is the case of the Lear's Macaw. Despite Voltalia Energia presenting only a simplified licensing, Inema approved the project in Bahia.

MP from Bahia speaks

According to the MPBA, the installation of the wind power project could cause irreversible impacts on the region's fauna and traditional communities. In the case of Inema, the MP recommended that it suspend or even annul the current environmental license for Voltalia Energia's wind energy park.

In addition, even after the presentation of the EIA/Rima, it recommended that a hearing be held with the broad participation of the affected population and communities. In the area where the wind energy park would be implemented in Bahia, there are eleven communities, with about 600 families, who, according to an investigation by the MP of Bahia, were not heard about the installation of the project in a place they use to develop activities. social, productive and cultural.

The complaint about the investment came from the Biodiversitas Foundation, which claims to be extremely happy that the MPBA was involved in the process and demanded that Inema comply with the legal determinations of the state environmental licensing. The foundation claims that Inema made a serious mistake by granting the license to Voltalia Energia without requiring the EIA/Rima on the impact on Lear's Macaws.

Wind power project sparks outrage

About a month ago, an 18-year-old environmental activist, outraged by the installation of the park, created an online petition on the Change.org website asking for the work to be suspended.

Náthaly Marcon works as a veterinary assistant, and is passionate about the Lear's Macaw species. So she decided to take the initiative to draw attention to the case.

Currently, the petition created by Náthaly already has more than 60 thousand signatures. If you also feel that the work should be suspended and would like to collaborate, Click here, sign the petition and share this article so that others understand the case.
