PRF Drones Take Action on Federal Highways, Catching Offenses such as Using a Cell Phone While Driving and Disregarding the Left Lane, as Well as Issuing Traffic Fines.

The Federal Highway Police (PRF) is always innovating to improve safety on the roads, and now it has introduced a technological novelty: the use of drones to identify offenses and issue traffic fines. The implementation of this technology has started to roll out on federal highways in some states, and it has already sparked discussions. With this, the PRF can catch drivers who disrespect traffic laws more efficiently and discreetly.

Drones in Monitoring: How PRF Is Issuing Traffic Fines

The PRF has begun using drones on BR-262 in Minas Gerais and BR-282 and BR-101 in Santa Catarina. These drones act as the police’s eyes in the sky, with zoom capabilities of up to seven times and flying at heights between 10 and 20 meters. They function like a “modern binocular,” according to Leandro Andrade, head of the PRF Delegation in São José (SC).

The idea is simple: while the drones fly over the highways, they identify traffic violations such as using a cell phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt, and even trucks occupying the left lane improperly. The great insight is that caught drivers are not approached at the moment of the infraction. This is because the recording of the offenses is done for later fine issuance, aiming to maintain safe traffic flow and avoiding stops that could cause accidents.

PRF Drone Fines: A Modern Solution to Old Problems

The use of drones to issue traffic fines by the PRF is an important advancement in enforcement. With zoom capability and ease of mobility, drones can capture details that police on the ground often cannot. This allows the PRF to be even more efficient in identifying violations.

Additionally, drones help to monitor stretches where shoulders are narrow or nonexistent, facilitating the work of police officers without putting the lives of drivers and officers at risk. This technology promises to change the way we see enforcement on highways.

The PRF also emphasizes that this initiative is part of a national guideline. So, other units in the country may adopt the same strategy soon, which could mean a considerable increase in the use of drones to catch offenses and issue traffic fines.

PRF Invests R$ 6.4 Million to Expand Drone Monitoring

The deployment of drones for issuing traffic fines is already in full swing and aims to expand even further. The PRF announced it will invest R$ 6.4 million to expand road monitoring with the purchase of 92 more aircraft. These drones will not only be used for traffic enforcement but also for intelligence activities and special operations.

According to the PRF, the purchase of these drones is “strategically relevant” as it increases monitoring capacity without overburdening traditional policing. The new aircraft will be used by the PRF’s Intelligence and Operations directorates, as well as the General Inspector’s office, to ensure everything is functioning according to regulations.

Six of these new drones will be allocated to the Federal District Military Police (PMDF), which also participated in this purchase. In other words, it’s not just the PRF that is betting on this technology to monitor offenses. The idea is for other police forces to use drones to make traffic safer throughout Brazil.

More Safety with Less Intervention

With the arrival of drones, the PRF gains a new ally to ensure that traffic laws are respected. These aircraft bring a series of benefits: from greater visibility to reducing direct contact with drivers, which can avoid the risks of accidents or confrontations.

The PRF emphasizes that all drones used are properly registered with the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), and the police officers responsible for their operation have received specific training from the Highway Military Police, holding certification to operate the aircraft. Each operation is planned in advance, following a flight plan registered with the Air Force, respecting all safety standards.

This advancement in enforcement shows how the PRF is committed to bringing innovations to the monitoring of highways, without neglecting safety and respect for traffic laws. The use of drones to issue traffic fines goes beyond simple violation recording; it is a modern way to ensure that roads are a safer place for everyone.
