The New National Identity Card Redefines Identification Standards in Brazil, Keeps the RG Valid Until 2032, and Exposes Practical Risks for Those Who Choose Not to Update the Document
The implementation of the National Identity Card (CIN) marked a structural change in the civil identification system in Brazil. Since 2022, when the federal government officially announced the new model, the document began to adopt the CPF as a unique number, valid throughout the national territory. At the same time, the traditional RG remains accepted until 2032, allowing for a gradual transition. Still, even without constituting a crime, failing to renew the identity can have concrete impacts on citizens’ routines, especially in essential services and institutional relationships.
Financial Obstacles Arise with Outdated Documents
Not updating the RG can initially create barriers in banks, notaries, and financial institutions. These entities, for security reasons, require valid and up-to-date documents for opening accounts, signing contracts, making withdrawals, and registrations. Thus, an expired RG is likely to be rejected, as institutions follow anti-fraud protocols, widely adopted in the Brazilian financial system. As a result, simple operations may be denied, compromising the autonomy of citizens.
Travel Becomes More Difficult Without Valid Documents
In addition, domestic and international travel may also be affected. For countries outside Mercosur, such as the United States, RG and passport are mandatory. For Mercosur countries, such as Argentina and Uruguay, the passport can substitute the RG. However, the main point remains: a valid RG is required to issue a passport. Therefore, expired, old, or damaged documents are often rejected by migration authorities, especially when the photo does not allow for clear identification, which can prevent planned embarkations and relocations.

Public Competitions and Exams Require Updated Identification
Meanwhile, public competitions and official exams, such as the National High School Exam (Enem), have strict identification criteria. Both public agencies and private examination boards require valid official documents on the day of the test. Thus, an expired RG may result in immediate prohibition from participation, even if the candidate is regularly enrolled. This factor turns the lack of updating into a direct risk for educational and professional opportunities.
Social Benefits May Be Blocked or Delayed
At the same time, social and labor benefits, such as Bolsa Família and PIS/Pasep, use data from the identity document to validate payments. Therefore, an expired RG may hinder the release of funds, as the correct identification of the beneficiary is a mandatory step in the process, according to the administrative requirements of managing agencies. In these cases, delays or blocks become frequent consequences of outdated documentation.
The Validity of the New CIN Requires Constant Attention
Differently from the old RG, the new National Identity Card has validity periods defined by age group. Thus, the model establishes 5 years of validity for children up to 12 years old, 10 years for individuals between 12 and 60 years old, and indefinite validity for those over 60 years old. Therefore, keeping track of these deadlines becomes essential, especially considering that after 2032, only the CIN will be officially accepted.
Issuance of the New Identity Follows National Rules
Finally, to request the first issuance of the CIN, the citizen must schedule an appointment in advance and appear at a state service unit on the chosen date. The cost of the document varies by state, however, as determined by Law No. 7,116 of 1983, the first issuance is free throughout Brazil. This guideline, defined by the federal government, seeks to ensure universal access to the new identification model.
In light of this transition scenario and defined deadlines, do you think that postponing the renewal of the document outweighs the practical risks that arise in daily life?
