The FPSO Sepetiba, from Petrobras, has just reached an impressive milestone in the Santos Basin, achieving a production of 180 thousand barrels of oil per day in the Mero field.

On August 27, 2024, the FPSO Sepetiba (floating production, storage, and offloading unit) reached its maximum production capacity, just eight months after the start of operations in the pre-salt. Reaching the mark of 180 thousand barrels of oil per day on schedule was the result of a combination of factors, such as the readiness of the oil and gas processing systems and the high productivity of the wells in the Mero field, representing a significant step for the promising future of the pre-salt.

The operation was further optimized by the early interconnection of all wells five months ahead of schedule, reducing the estimated time for this crucial step by 18% and accelerating the production ramp-up process (ramp-up). This performance positions the FPSO Sepetiba as a key player in Petrobras’ strategy for the development of the pre-salt.

The Mero Field: One of the Largest Pre-Salt Projects

The Mero field, located in the Libra block, is considered one of the most promising projects in the Brazilian pre-salt. With total production already above 400 thousand barrels per day, Mero represents a significant portion of Petrobras’ oil production and that of its international partners, including:

  • Shell (20%)
  • TotalEnergies (20%)
  • CNPC (10%)
  • CNOOC Limited (10%)
  • Pré-Sal Petróleo S.A. (PPSA), which manages the production-sharing contracts

Operated by Petrobras with a 40% stake, the Mero field is essential for increasing Brazilian production and its growing role as one of the largest global players in the oil industry.

The Success of FPSO Sepetiba: Factors That Led to Top Production

Several factors contributed to the success of FPSO Sepetiba and the achievement of 180 thousand barrels of oil per day within the expected timeline:

  1. Advanced Processing Systems: The efficiency of the oil processing and gas compression systems on the platform allowed production to be scaled up quickly and steadily, avoiding operational bottlenecks.
  2. Early Subsea Interconnections: Petrobras was able to interconnect all planned wells five months ahead of schedule, accelerating the production timeline.
  3. High Productivity of Wells: The Mero field is known for the high productivity of its wells, allowing for the rapid achievement of high production volumes efficiently.
  4. Offshore Operations Management: Petrobras continues to demonstrate its expertise in operating large offshore projects, especially in challenging areas like the pre-salt, where depths and geological conditions are complex.
  5. State-of-the-Art Technology: The FPSO Sepetiba is equipped with modern systems capable of processing up to 12 million cubic meters of natural gas per day, in addition to the 180 thousand barrels of oil. This ensures that both the oil and the associated natural gas are utilized efficiently.

Strategic Location and Robust Operation

The FPSO Sepetiba is anchored 180 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, in deep waters of 2,000 meters. Its strategic location in the Mero field facilitates the extraction of high-quality oil, making it a key asset for the growth of national oil production.

The unit has been chartered to SBM Offshore, one of the largest global companies in the manufacturing of floating production and storage units. The partnership with SBM further strengthens the operation, bringing technological innovation and operational efficiency to the project.

Impacts on the Oil Market and the Pre-Salt

The achievement of FPSO Sepetiba brings significant impacts not only for Petrobras but also for the global oil market. The growing production from the Brazilian pre-salt solidifies Brazil’s position as one of the world’s largest oil producers, with the capacity to influence prices and export volumes.

Moreover, the success in the Mero field reaffirms Petrobras’ capability to optimize large projects, an essential competency in light of the increasing global demand for energy and the need to maintain sustainable production, aligned with carbon emission reduction goals.

Future Perspectives: Production Increase and New Records

With FPSO Sepetiba operating at its maximum capacity, the outlook for future production in the Mero field is extremely positive. The pre-salt, already responsible for a significant portion of national oil production, will continue to grow in the coming years, driven by new technologies and strategic partnerships.

Petrobras, along with its partners, continues to invest in the development of the pre-salt, aiming not only to increase production but also to improve efficiency and sustainability of operations. The Mero field, with its vast reserves, is central to this strategy.

The mark of 180 thousand barrels per day achieved by FPSO Sepetiba is an important milestone for Petrobras and the oil industry in Brazil. This record, reached in record time, reflects the combination of high technology, efficient management, and the exploration of one of the most productive fields in the pre-salt.

With the continued success of projects like Sepetiba and the growth of the Mero field, Brazil positions itself as a global powerhouse in oil production, with the pre-salt playing an increasingly important role. Petrobras’ operational excellence, along with its international partners, ensures that new records are reached towards the promising future of the pre-salt.
