Neoenergia and Honda Advance Together in the Use of Green Hydrogen to Accelerate Sustainable Mobility in Brazil and Drive Energy Transformation in the Automotive Sector

On November 27, 2025, Neoenergia and Honda announced a strategic partnership aimed at boosting the use of green hydrogen in national mobility. The agreement confirms the installation of Neoenergia’s first green hydrogen refueling station in the country, which will be located in Brasília (DF), with an investment of over R$ 30 million. According to the automaker, the initiative will serve light and heavy vehicles, becoming a significant milestone for the advancement of sustainable mobility and energy transformation in the Brazilian automotive sector.

Infrastructure, Investments, and Timeline for the New Green Hydrogen Station

The new unit will feature a dedicated solar power plant to supply the electrolysis process for hydrogen production, ensuring a 100% renewable fuel.

The station is designed to operate at two pressures, allowing it to refuel everything from passenger cars to trucks and buses. The station is expected to be inaugurated in December 2025.

The terminal will be part of a pilot project being conducted by Neoenergia since 2022, which includes feasibility studies, usage tests, and operational monitoring.

Testing Honda Vehicles and Focusing on Energy Efficiency

Honda will play a central role in the validation and testing project. The company will use the Honda CR-V e:FCEV model, a hybrid vehicle with a fuel cell, to assess performance in refueling and urban operation.

The tests will be conducted over six months, during which gains in efficiency, autonomy, hydrogen consumption, and performance under various usage conditions will be analyzed. The goal is to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen as a sustainable alternative for urban and road transport in Brazil.

The partnership between the companies emphasizes their commitment to innovative solutions aimed at electrification and decarbonization of the Brazilian economy. The initiative strengthens the development of sustainable technologies, increases business opportunities, and consolidates Neoenergia’s position as a key player in energy transition, highlighted Eduardo Capelastegui, the company’s CEO.

For Arata Ichinose, CEO of Honda Automobiles in Brazil, the strategic collaboration in the country highlights the significant national potential for the advancement of hydrogen. With over three decades of research and experience in this field, Honda believes that projects of this nature are essential to broaden the possibilities for hydrogen application and accelerate the path toward a carbon-neutral society.

Green Hydrogen, Neoenergia, and the Brazilian Clean Energy Landscape

Green hydrogen is produced by water electrolysis using energy from renewable sources, such as solar and wind. It is considered one of the most promising fuels for sectors where total electrification faces limitations — such as cargo transport, urban mobility, and logistics — because it does not emit CO₂ or other pollutants during production and use.

Neoenergia has been increasing investments in this sector as part of its strategy to expand energy transition projects in the country. Brazil, in turn, has competitive advantages for large-scale production due to its potential for solar and wind generation. This allows hydrogen to be produced and consumed at low costs and with a high level of sustainability.

How the Partnership Contributes to Sustainable Mobility in Brazil

Real Expansion of Infrastructure and Use of Clean Fuel

The installation of the first green hydrogen refueling station represents an important advancement in energy infrastructure applied to mobility. The project paves the way for broader use of this technology in the future, especially as the automotive sector seeks alternatives beyond conventional electric vehicles.

Furthermore, the adoption of a fuel with no CO₂ emissions contributes to achieving climate neutrality goals by 2050 and reinforces Brazil’s role as a leader in clean energy technologies.

Scalability and Commercial Viability

The partnership also strengthens the credibility of hydrogen in the market and demonstrates how collaborations between the electricity sector and the automotive industry can promote innovation and sustainable development.

Automakers and energy companies have been accelerating investments in hydrogen solutions in countries like Germany, Japan, the United States, and South Korea. Brazil is beginning to integrate into this movement with its own infrastructure, technical studies, and real-scale testing.

Challenges, Limitations, and Issues to Be Overcome

Although progress is significant, there are challenges to face:

  • The infrastructure is still limited in Brazil.
  • The costs of hydrogen vehicles and fuel cell technologies remain high.
  • Large-scale operation must rely on public incentive policies.
  • Regulatory and economic support is needed for the expansion of industrial and commercial use.
  • Consumer acceptance is still an important point for hydrogen growth in the country.

Even so, the favorable global context for decarbonization and the widespread availability of renewable energy in Brazil indicate a trend of gradual growth for this technology.

Prospects for Green Hydrogen and Impact on the Energy and Transport Sector

Among the possible developments of the initiative are:

  • The expansion of refueling to other regions.
  • The development of a national production chain.
  • The increase in the fleet of hydrogen-powered vehicles.
  • The large-scale reduction of emissions in collective and freight transport.
  • The attraction of international partnerships and investments.

Green hydrogen could also become a fundamental component in other areas, such as industry and distributed generation, expanding opportunities and accelerating energy transformation in the country.

Transforming the Future of Mobility and Energy in Brazil

The combination of infrastructure, technology, and research positions the partnership between Neoenergia and Honda as a project that could redefine the use of clean fuels in the country. If successful, the initiative will help position Brazil as a reference in new sustainable technologies and strengthen the adoption of zero-emission mobility solutions.

The green hydrogen could cease to be a distant future solution and begin to integrate into Brazilian daily life, offering more efficient, economical, and sustainable alternatives. The collaboration between the companies demonstrates that structured investments, innovation, and environmental vision are essential to consolidating the country in the global energy transition.
