The Traditional Locomotive Manufacturer Decided to Install a Construction and Assembly Factory in Macaé, Rio de Janeiro
The Belgian multinational John Cockerill decided to install its new locomotive maneuvering factory in Brazil, in the city of Macaé, 200 km north of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The new factory is expected to start operations in the first quarter of 2022. The expectation is to generate 100 direct jobs in Macaé. The Installation of the New Locomotive Factory in Macaé
John Cockerill received a large order for 12 diesel-electric maneuvering locomotives of 700 HP for a major steel company in Brazil. Taking advantage of this order, John Cockerill decided to install the new factory in Macaé, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, aiming to supply locomotives for specialized industrial use to the Brazilian market and the global export market.
As disclosed by the website Revista Ferroviária, the manufacturing of the 12 maneuvering locomotives that John Cockerill has in its portfolio will be almost entirely done with inputs sourced from Brazil already at the new factory in the city of Macaé, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Only the basic technology and some components will be imported from Belgium.

Executives of the Multinational Met with the Mayor of Macaé
In May of this year, the mayor of Macaé, Welberth Rezende (Cidadania), met with representatives of the Belgian company, which has a base in the municipality, John Cockerill. The purpose of the meeting was to present the project for the installation of a locomotive factory and also the feasibility of operating the Light Rail Vehicle (VLT).
Welberth Rezende highlighted the importance of partnerships focused on the growth and development of the municipality. “We have made great progress in these five months, with licensed projects that will allow new companies to settle in our city, generating jobs. We can also highlight the installation process of the Port Terminal (Tepor) and investments in Macaé Airport, enabling greater infrastructure,” he pointed out.
On that occasion, the manager of the Oil & Gas Division, Marcelo Amado, along with the CEO of John Cockerill in Brazil, Jean-Noël OTT, gave a brief presentation on the company’s main activities. “John Cockerill operates in the areas of Energy, Defense, Environment, Services, Transportation, among others. The idea is to have a locomotive factory operating at our base in Macaé, from which we will later export our product to other countries,” he explained.

Toyota announced on 09/02 that it will reopen a third work shift at the Sorocaba factory, in the interior of São Paulo state, starting in January. The Japanese automaker, which was little affected by the semiconductor crisis, will operate on a 24-hour shift, and the company will hire 450 employees starting this month. An additional 50 jobs will be created in other units of the group and 350 in the regional supplier chain.
As mentioned on another occasion, in an interview with Jornal Cruzeiro do Sul, Toyota Brasil informed on July 6 that it was already studying the possibility of resuming the 3rd shift at the Sorocaba factory, in the interior of São Paulo state, starting next year. At the time, the company had not yet confirmed the possible new jobs to be created at the factory, but speculation estimated that 400 jobs would be generated.
Toyota Brasil stated that the company has continually assessed various internal and market scenarios to ensure the sustainability of its operations in the country. Therefore, it confirms it is in dialogue with the union to analyze the feasibility of the third shift at the Sorocaba factory starting in 2022. The number of potential new job vacancies has not yet been confirmed.
