The proposal of the new Port of São Luís is to be a bigger and better terminal for the population. The main objective would be to boost the economy of Maranhão and generate more than 10 jobs during its construction.

According to the president of the Porto São Luís SA Private Use Terminal, Helder Dantas, São Luís will receive a new Port that has an even better and more efficient project than the initial project and will generate thousands of jobs in the initial phase of construction. The port should have a handling capacity of about ten million tons per year, distributed in seven million soybeans and corn, 1,5 million fertilizers, 1,5 million general cargo and 1 million cubic meters of derivatives oil.

The importance of Porto for the state of Maranhão

According to Helder, it is inadmissible that a project like this is unfeasible given that it has a great geographical location such as São Marcos Bay with its high draft. Even more so at a time like this when Maranhão needs to accelerate its economy to fight the crisis imposed by the pandemic.

Porto São Luís is strategic and vital for the development of the state. He justified that the delay of the port was due to several factors that are common in Brazil in complex projects like this, such as the bureaucracy in obtaining licenses, land issues, authorizations and permissions with public agencies in the various spheres of government, exchange rate changes, among others. .

Helder says that the work on the Port of São Luís never stopped

The Porto São Luís teams were kept active in more than 120 jobs. These teams carry out construction and maintenance activities for the port's infrastructure, control systems, environmental monitoring, surveillance and other actions that, according to Helder, have never stopped.

Shareholders remain committed to building this project in São Luís, which is bigger and better after several revisions. The enterprise will be responsible not only for generating direct and indirect jobs, but will also accelerate the development of the country.

According to Helder, the port has never stopped and continues to develop several relevant social actions that include seven communities in the surrounding region, such as Cajueiro, Vila Maranhão, Mãe Chica, Porto Grande, Sítio São Benedito, Taim, Rio dos Cachorros. Even with the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, actions were carried out such as the creation of a recreation area, medical consultations, promotion of professional training courses, donation of masks and hand sanitizer for people in these communities.

More than 10 jobs will be generated in construction

Another action that is in progress is the construction of the Civil Police Station and a Military Police unit, at Km 7 of the BR135 in Vila Maranhão, which is about to be completed.

This action, which is linked to the project, will provide greater security for the communities and create a strategic point for the intelligence of the two police forces. In addition to this action, there is also a commitment to build a health clinic, a daycare center and a school in the region.

Porto São Luís promises to generate more than 2.500 direct jobs and approximately 7.500 indirect jobs during the period of its construction. Over 850 direct and 3.400 indirect jobs will be generated during the operation phase.
