Norte Energia Ensures Full Operation After Maintenance at Belo Monte
Norte Energia, marking an important step in the energy sector, has completed the preventive maintenance at one of the largest hydropower complexes in Brazil, Belo Monte, located in the southwest of Pará. This complex, composed of the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant and the Pimental Hydroelectric Plant, represents a milestone in 100% national energy generation. The conclusion of this process, in early December, ensures the efficient operation of the 18 turbines at Belo Monte and the six at Pimental, with an impressive combined capacity of 11,233 MW. This advancement is crucial, especially during the full flow months of the Xingu River, a peak productivity period for the complex.
The maintenance of the plants is strategically scheduled to coincide with the seasonal rainfall in the Médio Xingu region. Specifically, the Amazon summer, from July to November, is the chosen period to carry out these essential activities. This year, maintenance focused on three Generating Units (UGs) at Belo Monte and two at Pimental. The procedure included detailed inspections, component replacements, instrument calibrations, mechanical and electrical adjustments, as well as a general cleaning of the systems.
Future Strategies and Importance of Maintenance
In addition to preparing the UGs for the growing demand, Norte Energia is already outlining maintenance plans for the next year. This planning encompasses the selection of UGs for future maintenance, development of schedules, provision of materials, contracting services, and defining specific actions. According to Wagner Lellis, Maintenance Superintendent at Norte Energia, the maintenance process at a hydropower plant is comparable to that of a surgical center, emphasizing the importance of reliability and total availability of the equipment.

A study reveals the expansion of renewable energy procurement in Brazil and shows how companies are taking advantage of opportunities to reduce expenses, ensure energy efficiency, and strengthen strategic environmental commitments.
Maintenance not only ensures the efficient operation of the equipment but also prevents failures that can affect the delivery of renewable energy to the country. This practice is essential to avoid potentially irreparable damage, ensuring the continuous production of electricity. Dante Henrique da Silva, Planning and Maintenance Control Manager, highlights the importance of meticulous planning to avoid interruptions in energy generation.
Belo Monte plays a vital role in Brazil’s energy security, even during periods when it is not generating power at full capacity. The plant significantly contributes to the country’s energy regulation and reserve. During high production periods at Belo Monte, the reservoirs in the Southeast can recover and store energy, a crucial dynamic that reverses when the flow of the Xingu River decreases, a natural phenomenon in the Amazon region.
In summary, the preventive maintenance carried out by Norte Energia at Belo Monte not only ensures the efficient operation of the complex but also reinforces the company’s commitment to sustainability and energy security in the country. This ongoing effort is an example of Norte Energia’s commitment to clean and renewable energy generation, essential for Brazil’s sustainable development.
