Fires in São Paulo and the Amazon Trigger Meteorological Phenomena That Impress and Cause Concerns in Various Brazilian Cities.
The skies of São Paulo and other regions of Brazil have been filled with a series of impactful phenomena in recent days, particularly the red sun, dark rain, and sandstorms. These phenomena are a result of the fires ravaging the state of São Paulo and the Amazon, leading soot and pollution to alarming levels.
In recent days, various meteorological phenomena have drawn attention and caused concern in Brazil. The smoke and soot from the fires in São Paulo and the Amazon have spread to several regions, causing a series of unusual events. The red sun, observed in various cities, is one of the most visible and impactful effects of this situation.
Dark Rain and Sandstorms Are Some of the Phenomena
According to specialists from Climatempo, the current climatic conditions have favored the occurrence of dark rain in several cities in the interior of São Paulo. This phenomenon occurs when rain clouds meet soot from fires, resulting in precipitation with a grayish color and murky appearance. Additionally, strong winds, which in some regions reached 90 km/h, contributed to raising dust and causing sandstorms in interior cities.

In Greater São Paulo, the conditions are also concerning. Since last Friday (23), the sky has remained gray, with a strong presence of pollution. On Sunday (25), the temperature did not exceed 14°C, worsening the feeling of discomfort. The fires, which began on Thursday (22) near highways in Northwestern São Paulo, have already caused enormous disruptions, such as roadblocks, evacuation of homes, power outages, and even flight cancellations.
2,316 Fire Spots, Seven Times More Than the Total Registered in August 2023
So far, 2,316 fire spots have been recorded, nearly seven times more than the total registered in August 2023. On Saturday (24), an additional 305 new spots were accounted for by the Database of Fires (BDQueimadas) of the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), especially in cities such as Cajuru, Altinópolis, Olímpia, and Serra Azul, all in São Paulo. In total, 46 cities are under maximum alert and in emergency for 180 days, with the Ribeirão Preto region being one of the most affected.
Cetesb Detected a Significant Deterioration in Air Quality
The Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (Cetesb) detected a significant deterioration in air quality, which is now classified as “very bad,” just a step away from becoming “awful.” The concentration of MP10 particles reached alarming levels of 190 micrograms per cubic meter, well above the levels recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). In some areas, the relative humidity of the air dropped to below 20%, which is considered extremely harmful to health.
Goiânia and Ribeirão Preto Suffer
The situation in Ribeirão Preto is particularly grave, with 14 active fire spots still present as of Saturday night. The dense smoke forced the closure of Leite Lopes State Airport, which suspended landings and takeoffs. The Civil Defense recommended the use of masks to reduce smoke inhalation, and outdoor physical activities were suspended, including professional soccer games. In Goiânia (GO), where the situation is similar, the International Airport also operated under restrictions, cancelling several flights due to low visibility.
Red Sun Impresses
Another aspect that impressed residents and internet users was the red sun, which has become one of the most discussed phenomena on social media. According to meteorologists, the reddish hue of the sun is a result of extreme pollution, which reflects sunlight differently, especially at sunrise and sunset when the star is lower on the horizon.
With the forecast of new fire spots and strong winds, the phenomena are expected to continue in the coming days, bringing further challenges to the affected regions. Authorities are warning about the need for continued health precautions, especially regarding the use of masks and limiting outdoor activities, while the population awaits an improvement in weather conditions and air quality.
