Daily Monitoring of Fire Incidents in the Country, Conducted by the Sprinkler Brazil Institute, Records 2021 Reports

News about structural fires continues to rise this year. This is revealed by a survey from the Sprinkler Brazil Institute, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the use of sprinklers in fire prevention and control systems in industrial and commercial facilities across the country. Through daily monitoring of fire news in Brazil, the Institute captured 2021 incidents of structural fires in the first 11 months of this year, representing an increase of 7.8% compared to the same period last year, when 1864 reports were registered.

The numbers represent a slight decrease compared to the same period in 2021 (2092 incidents) and a significant increase compared to the first eight months of 2020, when 1100 reports were captured. “Fire incidents across the country continue to rise. They reflect issues in buildings, with examples in industries, shopping malls, hospitals, and other locations. Traditionally, these fires occur due to equipment quality problems, lack of maintenance, design and installation errors, and training issues with the workforce. What we notice is that there is also a lack of interest from owners in fire protection, doing only the bare minimum required to be approved by firefighters,” reports Marcelo Lima, consultant for the ISB.

The incidents recorded are so-called “structural fires,” meaning those that could have been avoided with the installation of sprinklers and occurred in warehouses, hospitals, hotels, schools, public buildings, museums, among others. The ISB does not include residential fires in its statistics, which, although also structural fires, are not monitored because fire safety legislation does not apply to single-family homes, where the highest number of incidents occurs.

Fire prevention and control legislation is state-level and is up to date. The legislation in São Paulo is one of the most advanced in the country and serves as a model for much of Brazil. “The issue is in applying it correctly,” explains Marcelo Lima.

“The state requires the installation of fire systems but does not make any demands on the quality level of the equipment. There is no certification, except for extinguishers. With this, we have systems installed throughout Brazil that fully comply with legislation but will probably not work, and this will only be discovered at the worst moment, during a fire incident,” concludes Lima.

Use of Sprinklers is Still Timid

In a survey conducted by the Ipsos Institute among multinational companies and national firms with more than 250 employees at the request of the ISB, it was revealed that the adoption rate of sprinklers among companies is low. Only 36% of the 300 companies interviewed by Ipsos reported having such systems in their facilities.

The survey also showed that only 14% of the respondents said they have such systems in all their units, and 22% stated they have the system in only some operational units.

The study found that the use of sprinklers is higher among multinationals. 48% of the foreign companies operating in the country surveyed reported having sprinklers in their operations. Among national companies, the percentage is 34%.

Company size also influences the adoption of this type of technology. The sprinkler usage rate in companies with more than 500 employees is 45%. Among smaller companies, with 250 to 499 employees, the percentage is 28%.

About the ISB (Sprinkler Brazil Institute)

The Sprinkler Brazil Institute (ISB) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the use of sprinklers – also known as automatic sprinklers – in fire prevention and control systems in industrial and commercial facilities across the country. Founded in 2011, the ISB advocates for the use of this technology as the most effective measure to prevent human and material losses.
