Chinese Scientists Announce High-Precision Camera
Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, through the Aerospace Information Research Institute, have developed a revolutionary spy camera that can capture minute details at distances never before achieved.
The device, based on Synthetic Aperture Lidar (SAL) technology, has achieved a millimeter-level resolution at distances of up to 100 kilometers, an impressive breakthrough in the field of remote surveillance.
During tests conducted at Qinghai Lake, a remote area in northwestern China, the system demonstrated its effectiveness by observing targets at a distance of 101.8 kilometers, identifying details as small as just 1.7 millimeters wide.
Furthermore, it was able to accurately measure the distance to objects with a margin of error of just 15.6 millimeters.
Performance Surpasses Current Technologies
The performance of this new system is unprecedented.
According to the South China Morning Post, SAL technology offers a level of precision 100 times greater than that of conventional spy cameras and state-of-the-art telescopes.
The principle of operation of Lidar — which stands for Light Detection and Ranging — is based on emitting a laser beam onto an object and measuring the time it takes for the reflected light to return to the sensor.
Although this technology is already widely used in high-resolution mapping, its potential for security and surveillance applications has been increasingly explored.
However, until now, the performance of laser-based imaging systems was significantly inferior to what has been achieved with the new SAL.
Comparison with Previous Technologies
The leap is even more impressive when compared to earlier experiments.
In 2011, Lockheed Martin, one of the largest companies in the aerospace sector, developed a Lidar system capable of achieving a resolution of two centimeters at a distance of 1.6 kilometers.
Years later, Chinese researchers managed to improve on this performance, achieving a resolution of five centimeters from 6.9 kilometers. Now, with SAL, the limits have been extended to unprecedented levels.
This technological leap was made possible by a combination of factors:
- The use of a powerful 103-watt laser;
- Advanced algorithms that reduce interference in the light signal;
- Real-time data processing;
- A significantly larger optical aperture.
Strategic Applications and Challenges to Be Overcome
The possibilities of this technological advancement are vast. According to a researcher who preferred to remain anonymous, “it’s not just about seeing a satellite — it’s about reading its serial numbers”.
He claims that, with this level of precision, it would be possible to detect damage to solar panels caused by micrometeorites or identify specific sensor loads in orbiting satellites.
However, despite the advancements, the system still faces significant challenges. One of the main obstacles is its sensitivity to weather variations.
The tests were conducted under ideal weather conditions, but any atmospheric interference can significantly affect the performance of the Lidar camera.
Moreover, SAL cannot track moving targets, a factor that limits its applicability in certain dynamic surveillance and monitoring situations.
The Boundary Between Earth and Space
One of the most intriguing aspects of this new technology is its observation capability at the Kármán Line, a region that defines the boundary between the Earth’s atmosphere and outer space.
This means that SAL could potentially be used for orbital monitoring, expanding remote observation capabilities beyond the planet.
Given these possibilities, experts point out that the development of technologies like this may have profound implications across various sectors, including national security, space exploration, and global surveillance.
Although technical challenges still need to be overcome, what has already been achieved demonstrates that the future of long-distance observation is becoming increasingly advanced.
