The municipality of Rio Verde, located in Southwest Goiás, will be the new hub of innovation and sustainability in the renewable fuels sector. The city will host a biogas plant, producing fuel from the vinasse of sugar cane.
The initiative, which has the support of the Goiás Government, aims to consolidate the state as a leader in the energy transition and promote the decarbonization of transportation.
The partnership was formalized during the Invest Goiás event, held in New Delhi, India, on February 13.

The agreement aims at the installation of the biogas plant, a clean and sustainable alternative for public transportation and other industries seeking alternatives to fossil fuels.
New Factory To Be Installed In Goiás
Biogas is a renewable fuel produced from organic waste, such as vinasse from sugar cane. According to Ronaldo Caiado, the agreement for the new factory with the Indian company places Goiás at the forefront of the energy transition in Brazil.
The governor emphasized that sustainability is one of the pillars of the state administration, and the production of biogas will be essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the state.
“Biogas is a viable and sustainable alternative, and this agreement with the Indian industry is another step towards consolidating our leadership in this sector,” Caiado stated during the signing ceremony.
The Choice Of Rio Verde To Install The New Factory
The choice of Rio Verde as the site for the factory is not by chance. The municipality is one of the largest sugar cane production hubs in Goiás, with several mills generating large quantities of vinasse, an essential byproduct for biogas production.
Moreover, the region has adequate infrastructure to accommodate the new industrial facility, which aligns with Goiás’ commitment to technological innovation and sustainable development.
The future industrial plant will be responsible for transforming vinasse into biogas, generating not only clean energy but also new jobs and boosting the local economy.
The former mayor of Rio Verde, Paulo do Vale, who was also present at the signing of the memorandum, emphasized the importance of the investment for the city’s economic growth.
“Rio Verde is strengthening itself as a hub of innovation and sustainability. This investment brings opportunities for the local economy, generates jobs, and places our city on the path of future energy solutions,” said Paulo.
Expansion Of Biogas Use In Public Transportation
The Goiás Government is already implementing actions to expand the use of biogas in public transportation.
The Metropolitan Region of Goiânia, for example, will receive 500 biogas-powered buses in the coming years, an initiative that aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to the decarbonization of the transportation matrix.
Currently, a biogas-powered bus is already in the testing phase in the city of Goiânia. The expectation is that, with the increase in the fleet, Goiás will become a national model for the use of renewable fuels, boosting the green economy and promoting more sustainable mobility.
International Partnership For The Energy Future Of Goiás
Discussions between the Goiás Government and the Indian company Raj Process Equipments and Systems began in 2020.
The partnership was formalized in 2025 with the signing of the memorandum of understanding, and the next steps include conducting technical studies to enable the installation of the factory in Rio Verde.
The expectation is that the biogas plant will not only supply the public transport fleet but also meet the demands of other industries seeking cleaner energy alternatives.
The current mayor of Rio Verde, Wellington Carrijo, also attended the signing ceremony and highlighted the benefits for the city.
“We are bringing innovation, development, and sustainability to our city. The installation of this industry will generate jobs and further strengthen our economy, placing Rio Verde at the forefront of renewable energies,” Carrijo stated.
