Petrobras and Ternium Sign Strategic Agreement to Boost Decarbonization and Promote Efficiency in the Steel Sector

In a bold step to strengthen the Brazilian energy and steel sector, Petrobras and Ternium announced a partnership that promises to drive the free market for natural gas. The agreement signed between the giants aims not only to ensure gas supply to Ternium’s plant in Rio de Janeiro but also to foster the transition to a more sustainable and decarbonized energy matrix.

Petrobras, with its strategic position in the energy sector, joins Ternium, one of the largest steel producers in Latin America, in a move that changes the energy landscape of the country. The free market for natural gas emerges as a key player in this transformation, offering more competitiveness and autonomy for companies seeking efficiency and sustainability.

Petrobras Director Affirms Commitment to Brazilian Natural Gas Market

“We are committed to providing solutions that benefit not only the parties involved but also the Brazilian natural gas market as a whole,” said Maurício Tolmasquim, Director of Energy Transition and Sustainability at Petrobras. According to him, this partnership is essential to create an open and competitive business environment, fundamental for developing new opportunities in the energy sector.

Production Capacity of Five Million Tons of Steel Plates per Year

On the other hand, Titus Schaar, President of Ternium Brazil, emphasized the strategic importance of this agreement for the company. “Through this agreement, we can improve the management of our resources, which is crucial for our processes and for advancing our steel decarbonization agenda,” Schaar stated. Ternium’s plant, located in Santa Cruz, with a production capacity of five million tons of steel plates per year, serves markets worldwide, including the United States, Mexico, Brazil, and Europe.

This partnership is not limited to the supply of natural gas. It also represents a significant advancement for Ternium’s environmental agenda, which seeks to align its operations with practices of sustainability and energy efficiency. The free market for natural gas allows Ternium to better control its costs and invest in decarbonizing its processes, strengthening its global competitiveness.

In Addition to Natural Gas, Petrobras Continues to Expand Its Operations on the Continent

Meanwhile, Petrobras continues to expand its operations on the continent, particularly with recent discoveries of natural gas in the Offshore Guajira Basin in Colombia. These reserves are estimated to have the potential of 6 trillion cubic feet, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable development in the region. “These discoveries are crucial to meet the gas demand in the Colombian market,” Petrobras stated in a statement.

This partnership between Petrobras and Ternium reflects not only the strengthening of the Brazilian gas market but also the commitment of both companies to energy transition and reducing carbon footprints.
