Santa Catarina Launches Via Mar, New 145 km Highway with 6 Lanes That Will Cost R$ 7.5 Billion to Eliminate the Bottleneck of BR.

A new 145 km highway with 6 lanes will cost R$ 7.5 billion to eliminate the bottleneck of BR, according to the state government, and should begin construction in the first half of 2026.

The project, called Via Mar, will be built between Joinville and the Grande Florianópolis Ring Road, aiming to ease the traffic that currently paralyzes thousands of drivers daily along BR-101.

The initiative comes after years of constant traffic jams, as the current stretch can no longer handle the increasing flow of vehicles.

The project was planned to provide a definitive alternative to the federal highway, which has become one of the biggest congestion points in the country.

Thus, the government hopes that the new route will provide more safety, speed, and quality of life for workers, tourists, and transporters.

Via Mar: The Megaproject That Promises to Alleviate Traffic from South to North of the State

The new 145 km highway with 6 lanes will cost R$ 7.5 billion to eliminate the bottleneck of BR, representing one of the largest investments in infrastructure ever announced for Santa Catarina.

There will be six modern lanes designed to support a high capacity of vehicles, allowing for a maximum speed of 120 km/h.

The state government highlights that Via Mar will not only be an alternative route but a structural road for economic development.

By interconnecting two strategic regions, the highway is expected to expedite logistics, boost tourism, and facilitate the daily commute of thousands of residents of Santa Catarina.

What the Government Says About the New 145 km Highway with 6 Lanes

The governor of Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello, stated that Via Mar was created in response to a problem that grows year by year: the extreme congestion of BR-101.

In his words:

“Via Mar will directly impact the lives of entrepreneurs, workers, and tourists.

Thus, BR-101 has collapsed. It is no longer effective to remedy the situation by suggesting specific travel times. All hours are congested. Therefore, Via Mar will be an alternative.”

The statement reinforces the urgent character of the project, as the heavy traffic on BR-101 prevents the minimum flow necessary for a highway of national importance.

For this reason, the government believes that the solution lies not in patches but in a new large-scale roadway structure.

Why Does BR-101 Face Such a Critical Bottleneck?

The so-called “bottleneck of BR-101” refers to the stretch where vehicle flow exceeds the lane capacity, causing constant slowdowns and long queues.

The problem is aggravated both by the increase in the number of cars and trucks and by the concentration of industrial and tourist hubs along the region.

Therefore, the new 145 km highway with 6 lanes will cost R$ 7.5 billion to eliminate the bottleneck of BR.

This directly addresses the root cause of congestion: lack of space and absence of efficient alternative routes.

Expected Impacts of Via Mar

With the completion of Via Mar, Santa Catarina is expected to experience significant changes:

Substantial reduction in congestion.

Improvement in cargo transport between the North and South of the state.

Greater agility for tourists and workers.

Increased road safety due to wide lanes and regulated speed.

Thus, economic stimulation in municipalities near the new mobility corridor.

Additionally, the project is expected to generate thousands of jobs directly and indirectly, boosting sectors such as construction, services, and commerce.

Fica a dica

O povo deve começar a pensar no pedágio dessa nova rodovia, que com certeza se tornará inviável , aos bolsos de muitos.
Aqui em MG na BR381, os pedágios custam 3,00, nas estaduais do Zema 15,00
