Google Is Building A Large Engineering Center In Brazil And Has Already Started Hiring
The Google announced on August 26, 2024, that construction is underway for a new engineering center in Brazil, located near the University of São Paulo (USP), close to the Institute of Technological Research (IPT). This venture is part of a broader strategy to expand the company’s operations in the country, focusing on digital security and privacy, areas of great relevance for both Brazil and the global landscape.
The construction officially began on March 2, 2024, and the center is expected to be inaugurated in January 2026. According to Alex Freire, engineering director of Google Brazil, this project is significant both personally and professionally. Freire, who has a deep connection with USP, noted that his mother taught at the university’s Institute of Physics and that it was there that he first encountered computing. “Returning and contributing to this community is a huge satisfaction,” Freire stated.
New Engineering Center In Brazil Is Hiring
The new engineering center in Brazil already has a team of one hundred engineers, and many more hires are expected in the coming years. This center will play a crucial role in developing global technological solutions, especially in combating Android phone theft, a frequent problem in Brazil and other parts of Latin America.

GSec Brazil: Center Of Excellence In Security And Privacy
As part of this expansion, Google also announced the creation of GSec Brazil, the first center of excellence in security and privacy in Latin America. This center will be part of a global network that already includes units in Munich, Malaga, and Dublin. GSec Brazil will have the mission of developing advanced technologies and collaborating with lawmakers, academics, and startups to study emerging technologies and strengthen digital security.
Among GSec Brazil’s activities are the analysis of the supply chain for open-source code and the development of solutions for security vulnerabilities, using artificial intelligence to improve defenses against phishing and malware attacks. “User protection and privacy are at the center of our initiatives,” Freire stated, reiterating Google’s commitment to digital security.
With this expansion, Google reinforces its presence in Brazil and reaffirms its commitment to creating an innovation environment that benefits not only the country, but also offers technological solutions with global impact, always focusing on security, privacy, and inclusion.
