Addition of it to concrete increases toughness by 32% and maximum strain capacity by 33%, according to the published research. This means that structures built with this concrete will not only last longer but also be safer, better resisting impacts and the wear of time.

Sustainability And Cost-Effectiveness: The Future Of Civil Engineering?

The substitution of sand with graphene does not just improve the physical properties of concrete. It also represents a significant step towards sustainability.

The production of traditional concrete heavily relies on sand, a natural resource that is becoming increasingly scarce due to intense mining.

Using graphene, on the other hand, reduces environmental impact, preserving natural habitats and decreasing the need for sand exploitation.

Another important point is cost savings. Although graphene is still expensive to produce, researchers believe the benefits outweigh the costs.

The superior durability of graphene concrete means less need for repairs and maintenance over time, translating into long-term financial savings. With the support of institutions like the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Science Foundation, the expectation is that graphene production costs will continue to fall, making this technology more accessible in the future.
