A Light, Compact, And Revolutionary Electric Motor Weighing Only 40 Kilograms Is About To Change Everything We Know About Efficiency And Design In The Industry.

CES in Las Vegas, the world’s largest technology fair, brought innovations for all sectors, but the automotive highlight went to Donut Lab, a Finnish company that presented a revolutionary electric motor.

With a ring shape, weighing just 40 kilograms, the motor promises to change the way electric vehicles are designed and manufactured.

Donut Lab is a subsidiary of Verge Motorcycles, recognized for the Verge TS, an electric motorcycle with a motor integrated directly into the rear wheel. This concept eliminates the traditional rim and ensures a futuristic look.

Launched in 2020, the TS impresses with up to 375 kilometers of range and 1,200 Nm of torque. However, its high price, between €33,549 and €55,329, shows that innovation still comes at a high cost.

Now, Donut Lab has expanded its technology beyond motorcycles. The ring motor for cars, designed for 21-inch tires, delivers up to 4,300 Nm of torque and 857 horsepower.

This configuration reduces weight, improves distribution, and increases the energy efficiency of vehicles.

Power, Lightness, And Versatility For Various Applications

Donut Lab’s technology goes beyond isolated motors. The company demonstrated how it is possible to combine multiple motors in a single vehicle.

Two motors, for example, can generate up to 1,700 combined horsepower. By comparison, the Rimac Nevera, one of the most advanced electric hypercars, achieves 1,914 horsepower with four motors.

The big difference is in weight: Donut Lab’s motors are considerably lighter, offering greater efficiency and range.

Another difference is the elimination of conventional transmissions. Integrating the motor directly into the tire makes vehicles lighter, simpler, and cheaper to manufacture.

This approach can significantly impact the automotive industry, especially in cost reduction and increasing accessibility to electric vehicles.

CES 2025

At CES, Donut Lab presented five motor models, adapted for different purposes. In addition to the 630 kW automotive model, versions for trucks (200 kW), motorcycles (150 kW), scooters (15 kW), and even drones, with a compact 3 kW motor, were showcased. This versatility reinforces the market potential of the technology.

Donut Lab also offers a modular platform, which includes battery modules, integrated control systems, and software. This facilitates the adoption of the technology by other manufacturers and expands the reach of the motors in the global market.

Combining power, lightness, and efficiency, Donut Lab’s motors promise to be a game changer for electric mobility.

The market is eagerly awaiting to see how manufacturers will incorporate this innovation into their future projects. The revolution of the donut-shaped motor is just beginning.
