Construction: The Plan of Brazil, Peru, and Colombia to Connect the Amazon

The northern region of Brazil has always suffered from low socioeconomic development, especially when compared to other parts of the country. Now, a new and ambitious construction project aims to change this scenario by connecting Brazil with neighboring Amazonian countries like Peru and Colombia. However, this initiative is not without criticism and challenges that need to be overcome.

The north of Brazil, historically forgotten in terms of infrastructure, sees a new hope with the construction plan aimed at connecting the Amazon. The project arises in response to a chronic problem: the concentration of population and economic development along the Brazilian coast. With nearly 7,500 km of coastline, most Brazilians live on the coast, leaving the northern region underdeveloped.

Construction Project Aims to Create Land and River Routes

The construction project aims to create land and river routes that will connect Brazil to neighboring countries like Peru and Colombia, seeking to boost the local and national economy. Currently, Brazil lacks road connections with some of its northern states, such as Amapá, and heavily relies on artificial passages like the Panama Canal for its exports.

Starting from Manaus

The new route, which will start in Manaus, promises to revolutionize the Free Trade Zone of Manaus, an industrial area with significant growth potential. From Manaus, the cargo will travel along the Solimões River, passing through cities like Tefé and Santo Antônio de Sá. Here, the route branches: one direction heads north, crossing Peru and Colombia to the port of Tumaco; the other heads south, reaching cities in Peru and Ecuador.

New Route May Further Facilitate Drug Trafficking

Despite the apparent benefits, criticism of the construction project is not unfounded. The Amazon region is one of the main corridors for international drug trafficking. Without stringent oversight, the new route may further facilitate drug trafficking. There are already examples of this: Ecuador, a large exporter of drugs to Europe, has seen a significant rise in drug seizures leaving its ports.

In 2021, almost 80 tons of drugs were seized destined for Europe, and the port of Santos in Brazil confiscated over 20 tons. With the new construction route, the concern is that trafficking may increase due to the greater ease of movement between countries.

Plan of Construction of Brazil, Peru, and Colombia to Connect the Amazon is an Audacious Initiative

The construction plan of Brazil, Peru, and Colombia to connect the Amazon is an audacious initiative that promises to bring development and integration to the northern region of Brazil. However, without measures for oversight and combating trafficking, the project could become a double-edged sword, bringing not only economic benefits but also significant challenges to safety and legality in the region.

It is crucial that the involved governments are aware of these challenges and prepared to face them, ensuring that infrastructure development is not compromised by illegal activities.
