The Chevrolet Onix Dominated The Brazilian Market, But Recent Mechanical Problems, Such As The Controversial Oil-Bathed Timing Belt, Shook Its Reputation And Sales.
In 2009, General Motors faced a global crisis, but from Brazil emerged a hope: the Chevrolet Onix. Launched to revive the brand, the model became a sales phenomenon. However, by 2025, the same car is associated with a new crisis, mainly due to the controversial oil-bathed timing belt.
This technology has generated debates about its maintenance costs and fragility, impacting Chevrolet’s image. GM extended the timing belt warranty, but the question remains: are these measures enough to regain trust in the Chevrolet Onix and prepare it for a new era of success?
Chevrolet Onix: GM Reinvents Its Strategy In Brazil
In the early 2010s, Chevrolet faced challenges in Brazil. Popular models like Celta and Corsa were outdated and unable to compete with more modern vehicles like the Hyundai HB20 and Ford Fiesta. The Chevrolet Agile, launched in 2009 as a bet to replace the Corsa, did not meet expectations, criticized for design, finishing, and mechanical issues.

In light of this, GM Brazil abandoned the influence of Opel and focused on developing products aligned with local consumers, with competitive costs and updated technology. In this context, the GSV (Global Small Vehicle) platform, or Gama 2, was created by GM Korea and adapted in Brazil, laying the foundation for the brand’s future successes.
The Launch And The Rise Of The First Onix

In October 2012, at the Auto Show in São Paulo, the first Chevrolet Onix was presented. This national project aimed to modernize the brand’s portfolio and cater to a demanding and connected consumer. Developed in Brazil with global support from GM, it stood out for innovation, being the first in its category to offer the MyLink multimedia center as standard.
The MyLink system allowed smartphone mirroring and app access, a breakthrough for popular cars in 2012. The Chevrolet Onix offered 1.0 and 1.4 Flex engines, manual transmission, and later, automatic, along with superior finishing compared to previous GM models. With marketing focused on fuel economy, low maintenance costs, and connectivity, the car, produced in Gravataí, began its successful journey.
The First Generation
The Chevrolet Onix quickly won over the public, becoming the best-selling vehicle in Brazil in 2015 and maintaining its dominance for six consecutive years. In 2019, it reached a record of over 240,000 units sold. The first facelift, in 2016 (2017 model), brought aesthetic, comfort, and mechanical improvements, such as electric steering and a six-speed manual transmission.
Despite the success, the Onix faced criticism: in 2017, it scored zero in the Latin NCAP safety test. GM claimed compliance with local standards, but Latin NCAP criticized the safety disparity with other markets. There were recalls, but they did not undermine its dominance. Chevrolet launched several versions, such as LS, LT, LTZ, Joy, Advantage, Effect, and Active, in addition to the Prisma sedan in 2017, consolidating its presence.
Technological Leap And The Consolidation Of Success
In 2019, Chevrolet launched the new generation of the Chevrolet Onix, built on the modern GEM (Global Emerging Markets) platform, developed with the Chinese SAIC-GM. The model raised the standard with six airbags as standard, stability control, and unprecedented connectivity, such as native 4G internet and Wi-Fi. Engine options were updated to 1.0 naturally aspirated and 1.0 turbo, the latter providing good performance and fuel efficiency.
The modern design and almost premium touch at a competitive price won over the public. By 2023, more than 2.2 million units had been produced in Brazil, accounting for about 80% of the global volume of the model. Even with the pandemic in 2020, the Chevrolet Onix remained the best-selling vehicle, offering a complete and attractive package.
Chronic Problems And The Crisis Of The Oil-Bathed Timing Belt
Beginning in 2021, the situation changed for the Chevrolet Onix. Besides more aggressive competitors, reports of mechanical problems multiplied, affecting the automatic transmission, electronic system, overheating, turbine noise, and suspension, and failures in StabiliTrak. The Onix lost its sales leadership, falling to fifth place in 2021. Two cases of fires involving the Onix Plus led to a recall to correct the engine software.
The most serious issue, however, was the controversy surrounding the oil-bathed timing belt. Cases of premature belt failure resulted in high repair costs (R$ 2,500 to R$ 5,000), earning the car nicknames like “bomb car” and “new Marea.” GM extended the warranty for the timing belt in November 2024 to 240,000 km (with conditions) and, in April 2025, expanded this warranty even for those who didn’t have all reviews done at the dealership, subject to inspection.
The Facelift Of The Chevrolet Onix And The Battle For Trust
Despite the problems, the Chevrolet Onix is preparing for a facelift for the 2026 model. GM aims to reposition the car with a renewed design, internal and mechanical improvements, and possible direct injection in the 1.0 turbo engine, aiming to meet new environmental requirements, although without an apparent hybrid system. An investment of R$ 1.2 billion in the Gravataí plant indicates that GM hasn’t given up on the model.
The big question is whether the facelift and warranty measures will be enough to regain public trust and face an increasingly demanding market that is already looking at hybrid and electric models. The legacy of the Chevrolet Onix is undeniable, having changed the perception of compact cars in Brazil, but now it faces its biggest challenge: proving that it can overcome its flaws and return to being an uncontested champion.
