Billionaire Rubens Ometto, owner of the Cosan empire, is selling his ethanol and sugar mills in Mato Grosso do Sul! The decision promises to shake up the market, generating new opportunities for investors and shaking the expanding sugar-energy sector in Brazil. What will happen to the future of the mills in Rio Brilhante and Caarapó? Stay tuned!

Rubens Ometto, the billionaire CEO of the Cosan Group, one of the largest powerhouses in Brazil’s energy and infrastructure sector, is willing to part with ethanol and sugar mills located in Mato Grosso do Sul.

The news was revealed by columnist Lauro Jardim of the newspaper O Globo, and indicates that three production units are on the negotiation radar.

They are located in the municipalities of Rio Brilhante and Caarapó, but there is currently no information on which one will be the first to be offered to the market.

Rubens Ometto’s Strategy: Sell and Delever

Rubens Ometto’s strategy is clear and straightforward.

The billionaire plans to “sell, sell and sell what he can to deleverage the Cosan Group”, as pointed out by columnist Jardim.

These mills are part of the portfolio of Raízen, a joint venture formed by Cosan and Shell, and include three units in Mato Grosso do Sul: the Rio Brilhante Bioenergy Park, the Passa Tempo Bioenergy Park, both located in Rio Brilhante, and the Caarapó Bioenergy Park, situated in Caarapó municipality.

Growth of the Sugar-Energy Sector in the State

The announcement comes at a time of increasing prominence for the sugar-energy sector in Mato Grosso do Sul.

Data from Biosul, the Association of Bioenergy Producers in the state, shows that sugar production reached an impressive volume of 2 million tons in the 2023/2024 harvest, a 55% increase compared to the previous cycle.

This is the largest volume ever recorded in the state’s history, placing Mato Grosso do Sul as the 5th largest sugar producer in Brazil.

Mato Grosso do Sul: One of the Largest Ethanol Producers

In addition to excelling in sugar production, the state also shows impressive numbers in ethanol production.

As of November 2023, Mato Grosso do Sul produced 3.2 billion liters of ethanol, including 2.2 billion liters of hydrated ethanol and 1 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol.

Although the volume of anhydrous ethanol registered a slight decline of 1%, the production of hydrated ethanol increased by 25%, highlighting robust growth in the sector.

The Economic Impact of the Sugar-Energy Sector on the State

The significant growth in sugar and ethanol production has generated a substantial impact on the state’s economy.

Mato Grosso do Sul is already one of the main contributors to export revenue in Brazil, and the expansion of the sugar-energy sector further contributes to this picture.

Érico Paredes, executive director of Biosul, commented on the growth moment: “This is an important milestone for Mato Grosso do Sul, which is already one of the main contributors to export revenue in the state’s trade balance”.

With the increase in production and the growing importance of the sector in the economic context of Mato Grosso do Sul, the possible sale of the ethanol and sugar mills should not go unnoticed.

The transaction could affect not only the local market but also attract investors from different regions, interested in the opportunities that the sugar-energy sector offers.

Who is Rubens Ometto? The Businessman Behind the Cosan Empire

Rubens Ometto Silveira Mello, 75, is one of the most influential businessmen in Brazilian agribusiness.

Born in Piracicaba, in the interior of São Paulo, Ometto built a true empire through the Cosan Group.

Founded by his family, Cosan has become one of the world’s largest producers of ethanol and sugar.

In 2021, Ometto was included by Forbes magazine in the list of the ten richest billionaires in Brazil, with an estimated net worth of $1.3 billion (approximately R$ 7.5 billion).

In addition to his position as CEO of Cosan, Rubens Ometto chairs the Board of Directors of the Group, which, besides operating in the sugar-energy sector, is also responsible for businesses in logistics, fuels, and energy.

The move to sell ethanol and sugar mills is seen as an attempt to reduce the group’s leverage and focus efforts on areas that bring higher financial returns.

The Market Impact and What Is Expected from the Deal

The sale of these ethanol and sugar mills could significantly impact the market.

The Brazilian sugar-energy sector is one of the most promising and attracts both domestic and international investors looking for assets in the biofuels segment.

The possible auction of the units in Mato Grosso do Sul could therefore attract a lot of attention and generate intense competition.

The Future of the Mills in Rio Brilhante and Caarapó

Although the sale process is still in its early stages and details about the transaction are unclear, it is expected that the future of the mills in Rio Brilhante and Caarapó will be closely monitored by the market.

These two municipalities hold great relevance in the production of ethanol and sugar in the state, and the transaction could represent an important change for the sector in Brazil.

Rubens Ometto and the Quest for Greater Profitability

Ometto’s move to sell part of his mills is directly linked to the quest for a healthier financial structure for the Cosan Group.

Financial leverage, which has been a challenge for many large corporations, is a crucial factor in the strategic decisions of companies the size of Cosan.

By reducing dependence on large assets and seeking more profitable operations, Ometto is attempting to ensure the continued growth of Cosan in the long term.

How Is the Market Reacting to the Possible Sale?

The market’s reaction to the possible sale of the mills is a point of interest for analysts and investors.

Ometto’s move comes at a time of economic recovery and growth in the sugar-energy sector, which may generate new opportunities in the sector.

The expectation is that major investors from inside and outside Brazil may be interested in purchasing these units, given the strategic role that ethanol and sugar mills play in the Brazilian energy matrix.

Conclusion: The Future of Cosan and Its Impact on Brazil’s Economy

Rubens Ometto, one of the largest businessmen in Brazilian agribusiness, is preparing for a strategic change in the Cosan Group by selling ethanol and sugar mills in Mato Grosso do Sul.

The decision is part of a strategy of reducing leverage and focusing on more profitable operations.

As the market awaits further details about the transaction, the impact of this sale could be significant for the sugar-energy sector and for the economy of Brazil as a whole.

What do you think of Rubens Ometto’s strategy? Do you believe that this sale will affect the biofuels market in Brazil? Leave your opinion in the comments.
