The 32,8 Thousand Ton Warship Of The Navy, 265 Meters Long, Anchored Since 2017 In Rio De Janeiro Has Been Sold And Will Become Scrap

The largest warship in the history of the Brazilian Navy, the NAe São Paulo, was sold last week for the price of a Porsche car to become scrap. The sale took place through an online auction, valued at R$ 10,550,000. The amount paid for the ship corresponds to the price of a Porsche 918 Spyder, which varies between R$ 10 and 12 million. So far, it is still unknown who the buyer of the decommissioned vessel is.

The NAe São Paulo was the base of a squadron of McDonnell Douglas A-4 fighter jets, which were renamed by the Navy to AF-1. Now, the aircraft are housed within an airbase, even though they are adapted to take off and land from ships.

This was not the first time the Armed Forces “renamed” an item. In 2020, the Multipurpose Helicopter Carrier Atlântico was renamed “Aircraft Carrier.” At the time, the justification given by the Brazilian Navy for the name change was that the vessel is capable of receiving fixed-wing aircraft and vertical takeoff and landing.

The warship, 32,8 thousand tons and 265 meters long, has been anchored since 2017 in Rio de Janeiro, when the government gave up modernizing the vessel and opted to sell it. Since then, several NGOs have tried to turn it into a museum, while the Brazilian Navy sought to get rid of the equipment.

With the sale, the buyer is responsible for transporting the ship; however, in the case of the NAe São Paulo from the Navy, it will no longer be possible, as the vessel can no longer move itself, requiring the new owner to dismantle it. This way, they will be able to profit from the scrap.

By contractual requirement from France, which built and sold the ship to the Brazilian Navy, it must be dismantled by recycling shipyards approved by the European Union, which comply with recycling standards and toxic waste collection.
