Environmental Hypocrisy and Foreign Exploitation in the Equatorial Margin: Is Brazil Being Deceived?
The Brazilian Equatorial Margin has a huge potential for oil production, but it faces an avalanche of criticism and resistance from environmental groups and international NGOs.
Meanwhile, neighboring countries like Guyana and Suriname are exploring their reserves without major impediments, enriching themselves with foreign investments and growing economically at impressive rates. What explains this disparity?
Foreign Companies Exploit Without Rules, While Brazil Remains Stuck
Guyana, for instance, has recorded an economic growth of 57% thanks to oil exploitation, while Brazil faces environmental and bureaucratic obstacles for the same type of operation. The curious thing is that the companies exploring Guyanese oil do not have the same environmental commitment as Petrobras. Foreign multinationals extract the resource without applying mitigation measures and without strict emission controls, as is the case with the Brazilian state company.

Offshore industrial demand in Macaé skyrockets with the recovery of oil and gas and could grow by up to 396% by 2026 in the Campos Basin.

Brazilian giant expands borders in the Southeast: Petrobras confirms new oil discovery in ultra-deep waters in the pre-salt of the Campos Basin.

Alert in the global energy market: Severe tropical cyclone hits the coast and disrupts gas production at major plants in Australia, threatening global supply.
If an environmental disaster occurs, who will take responsibility? History shows that these companies will simply wash their hands and continue exploring elsewhere. Brazil will bear the loss, and the Amazon will pay the price.
Is Brazilian Oil Being “Sucked” Away?
Experts suspect that, through sophisticated methods, oil from the Equatorial Margin may be being siphoned off by these foreign operations. Without Brazil conducting its own exploration, foreign companies may be extracting resources that belong to the Brazilian people.
The most absurd part? Brazil buys crude oil from Guyana, meaning a resource that could be produced here, with stricter regulation and environmental control, is being imported at higher prices.
Petrobras: The Company Best Prepared for Sustainable Exploration
Unlike the multinationals operating in other countries, Petrobras is globally recognized for its technological advances and environmental commitment. The Brazilian state company has experience in operating in the pre-salt layer, ensuring very low emission levels and employing strict safety methods.
If Petrobras were allowed to explore the Equatorial Margin, the environmental impacts would be immensely reduced, in addition to ensuring that the wealth generated remains in Brazil, benefiting the national economy and funding environmental preservation measures.
The True Agenda Behind Environmentalist Pressure
Many groups that pressure against Brazilian oil exploitation in the Equatorial Margin receive funding from foreign organizations. The question nobody asks is: Why do these same organizations not protest against exploration in Guyana?
The answer is simple: while Brazil remains bogged down in endless discussions, other countries take advantage and extract the oil that could be benefiting the Brazilian people.
Brazil Must Act Before It Is Too Late
If Brazil does not make a swift decision, oil from the Equatorial Margin will continue to be exploited indirectly, without environmental control, and without the Brazilian population seeing a dime of that wealth.
The solution? Ensure that Petrobras leads this exploration, with an environmental commitment and mitigation measures to protect the Amazon and finance the energy transition.
Otherwise, we will continue to be hostage to environmental hypocrisy and watch from afar as foreigners profit from what should be ours.
And you, do you think Brazil is being deceived?
