The Chevrolet Onix 2026 Arrives More Economical, With Revised Calibration and Versions Included in the Sustainable Car, Reducing the Entry Price. The Oil-Coated Belt Has Been Reinforced and Now Comes With a Warranty of 240 Thousand Km

The Onix 2026 lineup arrives at dealerships with a light facelift at the front, larger screens, revised engine calibration, and a focus on efficiency. Chevrolet has also maintained the controversial oil-coated timing belt, but claims to have reinforced the part to reduce clogging risks when using off-spec lubricant, a change presented at the debut of the 2026 line.

According to engineering, the new coating with more fiberglass helps prevent the detachment of particles that could previously obstruct oil ducts, the pump, and the sump pickup.

In terms of pricing, the hatch starts at R$ 99,990 for the 1.0 manual version and goes up to R$ 130,190 for the top-of-the-line RS. The range reflects both the content per version and the effects of the Sustainable Car regulations on configurations eligible for zero IPI.

Sustainable Car: Zero IPI and Impact on Your Wallet

The federal government has implemented the “Green IPI” within the Sustainable Car program, which eliminates the IPI for compact vehicles manufactured in Brazil that meet energy efficiency, safety, and recyclability goals. Among the criteria, the government highlights the limit for CO₂ emissions per kilometer and minimum recyclable content, as well as domestic production. In practice, some versions of the Onix were included and show a reduction in pricing, such as the 1.0 MT.

GM has confirmed power adjustments in the Onix 2026 to take advantage of the benefit. The 1.0 turbo has increased to 115.5 hp via management software, qualifying the model for the program. The benefited version is the 1.0 turbo manual, while other trims maintain normal taxation. A direct result of this is the starting price of R$ 99,990 already with the exemption applied to eligible versions.

Why This Matters: with zero IPI, versions of the Onix can achieve better cost-benefit without changing the platform or transmission, favoring those who prioritize entry price.

Consumption and Performance: What Do Inmetro and the Tests Say

According to official data from PBEV/Inmetro, the Onix turbo AT registers 12.1 km/l in the city and 15.3 km/l on the highway with gasoline, and 8.6 km/l and 10.9 km/l with ethanol. The manual 1.0 turbo versions are even more economical, reaching 13.7 km/l city and 17.7 km/l highway with gasoline, according to information from the Terra portal. These numbers explain the strategy to access the tax benefit, as the program prioritizes energy efficiency.

In press evaluations, the 0 to 100 km/h of the automatic has slightly decreased to 10.5 s, reflecting the new power tuning, but real highway consumption remains competitive, with reports around 15.8 km/l. The difference compared to the PBEV is attributed to usage conditions and measurement methods.

The consumption of the Onix 2026 has improved in official measurements and remains good in practice. For those who drive a lot, manual versions tend to deliver the best efficiency, while the AT maintains comfort with slight losses in performance.

Oil-Coated Belt: Technical Reinforcement and Extended Warranty

A sensitive point since 2020, the oil-coated timing belt has received new material and reinforcements in the 2026 line. Quatro Rodas explains that the additional fabric reduces the risk of clogs even if the owner uses oil without the Dexos 1 Gen 2 approval, although correct lubricant use remains mandatory.

In addition to the reinforcement, GM has extended the warranty on the belt to 240,000 km since November 2024, a measure retroactive to Onix, Onix Plus, Tracker, and Montana equipped with 1.0 aspirated and turbo engines, and 1.2 turbo. Attention: following the maintenance plan and using oil of the correct specification continue to be the best practices to preserve the assembly.

The 240-thousand km warranty and the material reinforcement reduce the risk and anxiety for those who fear the part, but neglecting oil changes can still cause serious damage to the engine.

Equipment and Safety: Where the Onix Advances and Where It Still Falls Short

The Onix 2026 has gained 11-inch screen in the intermediate versions, 8” digital display, six airbags, connectivity, and more robust comfort items, such as automatic headlight activation and digital air conditioning in the top trims. Critical Point: the package does not include essential ADAS such as autonomous emergency braking and lane assist, features already seen in direct competitors.

To illustrate the difference, the Hyundai HB20 Platinum Safety lists FCA (autonomous braking), LKA/LFA (lane keeping and centering), BCA (blind spot), RCCA (rear cross-traffic), SEW (safe exit), DAW (fatigue detector), and HBA (adaptive high beam) in its official catalog. In active safety, the Onix falls behind, which may weigh on families and fleet operators who prioritize accident prevention.

Versions, Prices, and Which One Makes Sense for Whom

The 2026 family starts at R$ 99,990 (1.0 MT) and goes up to R$ 130,190 (RS). Those looking for low price and economy should consider the 1.0 MT and 1.0 turbo MT. For those who prioritize comfort, the AT versions provide good urban drivability and consistent consumption. The RS adds a sporty look and a complete connectivity package. Buying Tip: evaluate the total cost of ownership including fuel, insurance, and maintenance, not just the sticker price.

The Onix 2026 addresses sensitive points with reinforcement in the oil-coated belt, extended warranty, and better efficiency to qualify for the Sustainable Car, which helps to lower the entry price. What still lacks is a leap in active safety, already common in rivals like the HB20. If consumption, connectivity, and price are priorities, the Onix becomes a rational purchase again. If ADAS are part of your criteria, it’s worth comparing with competitors before making a decision.
