Monitoring and Periodic Preventive Maintenance Allow for Early Detection of Possible Failures in System Operation
The use of solar energy as a clean alternative energy source is an increasingly present reality worldwide, whether in residential, industrial, commercial, or rural segments. In Brazil, solar participation is rapidly growing, placing the country in the 6th position globally for solar power generation, according to Absolar (Brazilian Solar Photovoltaic Association).
However, what many of these users, or even those interested in acquiring this solar equipment, may overlook is that there are some important issues to ensure that this solar equipment operates at maximum performance and efficiency, which will directly influence one of the crucial points for those opting for the photovoltaic system – savings on energy bills.
Choosing Equipment for Maximum Performance
The first tip is for those evaluating the possibility of installing a photovoltaic system. Engineer Marcelo Niendicker advises that choosing the right equipment directly influences the efficiency and performance of the system. “For example, low-quality modules contribute to low energy generation and may have premature operational failures,” Marcelo explains. An evolution in photovoltaic energy, which is beginning to arrive in Brazil, is battery storage. For it to work, it needs to be used with a hybrid inverter. In this case, there is even the possibility of storage without solar panels, which makes it possible to install the system in apartments, for example.

However, the engineer warns that attention must also be paid to the performance of the batteries. “Reliability and durability can vary significantly among different suppliers, which can leave the user in a bind when they need the batteries the most, usually during outages from utility companies. Therefore, if not chosen carefully, both points, modules and batteries, can cause great frustration for users of hybrid systems,” he advises.
Importance of Efficiency and Maintenance
In this regard, Marcelo emphasizes that it is very important to choose equipment with high efficiency, especially when talking about ‘Euro’ efficiency, the European Efficiency (EU). EU Efficiency is a weighted average of efficiencies calculated based on the annual power distribution found in the European climate. The scale ranges from 0 to 100%, and the weighting factor with the most emphasis is at 50% loading, as this is the most common in Europe.
“SolaX Power inverters, for example, have a Euro efficiency above 97%, so they deliver more energy at the end of each day of operation,” explains Marcelo, highlighting the equipment from the multinational SolaX Power, a recent entrant in Brazil, which introduced the first hybrid inverter into the Asian market and brought this expertise in storage solar for Brazilian consumers, with the potential for self-generating clean energy and energy independence.
Installation and Post-Installation Care
Has the decision been made on which equipment will be purchased? Then it is necessary to choose the installation location appropriately. “The location, orientation, and tilt of the modules greatly affect the performance of any solar power plant, as it must be free of obstacles that cause shading. Therefore, the orientation and tilt should be adjusted according to the project.”
And what care should be observed once the equipment is installed and operational? The engineer advises that monitoring is crucial to detect anomalies and operational failures, which can range from a simple activation of some protective device to a failure in the storage system or photovoltaic modules.
Additionally, along with this monitoring, preventive maintenance is also important. “Typically, cleaning, primarily of the photovoltaic modules, and a visual inspection of the entire system are performed to identify the general integrity of the system, with special attention to disconnection (which connects and disconnects the system) and protection devices.” He adds, “It’s important to highlight that the frequency and maintenance plan should always be evaluated by the company responsible for the installation, but usually preventive maintenance should be performed every six months.”
Global Contribution of SolaX Power
Furthermore, there is the possibility of software updates for various system components, including inverters and batteries, “but, in general, it is not necessary to frequently update the system because these are designed for a long useful life.”
It is important to emphasize that solar integrators are essential professionals in the solar energy chain, as they are responsible for assisting clients with information and installation of a photovoltaic system, including all these points of attention, from choosing equipment to care to be observed during use. To assist in this process, these professionals maintain contact with distributors to offer the best equipment and solutions. Data from Greener indicates that Brazil has 26,150 active photovoltaic integrators.
