The Pentagon Sent a Direct Warning to Any Nation or Group Planning a Nuclear Attack Against the United States: “We Will Find You and Hold You Accountable”. The Statement Came After the Conclusion of the Prominent Hunt Nuclear Forensics Exercise, Held from January 26 to 31.
The simulation focused on responding to a nuclear attack scenario, where specialized teams analyzed radioactive debris to trace the origin of the explosion. The Pentagon announcement came just hours after China claimed to be ready for a tariff war and any other type of confrontation.
The Prominent Hunt Brought Together Experts Equipped with Protection Against Radioactive Materials. During the exercise, nuclear detonations were simulated, and teams collected ground evidence to determine the isotopic composition and origin of the material used.
The goal is to ensure that, in the event of a real explosion, it is possible to accurately identify who was responsible and what the trajectory of the nuclear material used was. According to Brian Kohler, director of the Pentagon’s Nuclear Affairs Office, this technical forensics is an essential element in the U.S. deterrence strategy.

“Nuclear forensics sends a clear message to our adversaries: the U.S. government has the capability to identify the origin of a nuclear detonation, which means any attack can be traced back to its perpetrators”, said Kohler.
What Motivated the Pentagon Exercise and the Relationship with China
The disclosure of the training conclusion came shortly after China declared that it is ready for an economic and military confrontation. The Chinese government responded to former President Donald Trump’s promise to impose new tariffs on the country, warning that it is prepared for a tariff war and any other type of conflict arising from that dispute.
Although the Pentagon has emphasized that nuclear exercises have been occurring regularly since 2012, the timing of the announcement in relation to China’s declaration has generated speculation about an indirect response to the rising tensions between global powers.
The FBI’s public relations officer, Sarah Ruane, explained that these trainings are planned months in advance. However, the timing of the report’s release could serve as a strategic message to U.S. rivals.
The Impact of Nuclear Forensics on Global Security
The use of nuclear forensics has become a mandatory requirement in the U.S. after the September 11 attacks. The technology allows tracking the origin of radioactive materials by comparing their chemical and isotopic characteristics with existing databases. This Pentagon process functions like a “nuclear fingerprint”, similar to DNA analysis in criminal investigations.
Timothy Jacobb-Hood, senior scientific advisor for the Nuclear Affairs Office, explained that this capability is crucial for identifying the authorship of a nuclear attack, especially in situations where the perpetrators try to conceal their involvement.
“If a bomb explodes in a city, collecting debris from the ground will be essential to find out where it came from and how it got there. This knowledge will allow for an appropriate response from the country’s senior leaders”, said Pentagon official Jacobb-Hood.
