Search For Oil In The Mouth Of The Amazon Remains Suspended After Leak. Ibama, MPF, And ANP Analyze Environmental Risks And Legality Of Petrobras’ License.
The exploration of oil in the Mouth of the Amazon is going through a new moment of uncertainty. The drilling activities conducted by Petrobras have been paralyzed for ten days following the identification of a fluid leak in a well located about 175 kilometers off the coast of Amapá.
Since then, the incident has triggered a series of technical evaluations, environmental questions, and legal movements.
Although the state-owned company claims that the leak was quickly contained, the case has reignited the debate over the risks associated with oil exploration in one of the most environmentally sensitive regions in the country.

Ibama Demands Clarifications And Expands Risk Analysis
Shortly after the incident, Ibama requested new technical information from Petrobras. The goal is to understand the causes of the leak and assess possible environmental consequences. Additionally, the environmental agency is analyzing whether it will be necessary to reinforce risk management in operations carried out in the Equatorial Margin.
In a statement, the institute informed that the causes of the leak are still under investigation and confirmed that drilling activities have been interrupted. Ibama has also opened an internal administrative process to monitor the actions taken by Petrobras, a procedure classified as standard in situations involving environmental emergencies.
MPF Evaluates Legality Of The Environmental License In Amapá
In the legal field, the episode has also taken on new contours. The Federal Public Ministry in Amapá has begun analyzing the information provided by both Petrobras and Ibama. The investigation is part of a process that discusses the regularity of the license granted for oil exploration in the region.
So far, there is no defined deadline for the conclusion of this analysis. Depending on the understanding of the MPF, the outcome may result in the suspension of the environmental license. In the meantime, the resumption of oil searches remains undefined.
ANP Conditions Resumption Of Drilling On New Requirements
Alongside environmental and legal investigations, the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels is also monitoring the case. The ANP has informed that it will establish conditions for Petrobras to resume drilling only after identifying the immediate causes of the incident and proving that all necessary measures have been taken.
“The ANP continues to monitor the situation and its developments with Petrobras, having already held a meeting with the company, which reported a failure in the riser connection. Petrobras stated that it isolated the lines that caused the fluid leak and is removing the riser to correct the failure,” says part of the statement sent by the agency.
In addition, the announcement states: “The ANP will establish conditions for Petrobras to resume drilling only after the immediate causes of the incident have been determined, as well as the appropriate actions for its mitigation have been taken.”
Petrobras Details Leak And Denies Environmental Damage
Petrobras reported that the loss of drilling fluid was identified on January 4. According to the company, the occurrence was immediately isolated, and the affected line will be brought to the surface for assessment and repairs.
The state-owned company emphasized that there are no structural problems with the rig or the well, which remain in a safe condition. Furthermore, it reiterated that the fluid used in the process meets the permitted toxicity limits and is biodegradable.
“There are no problems with the rig or with the well, which remain in a completely safe condition. The occurrence also does not pose risks to the safety of the drilling operation,” the company stated. In another part, it added: “The fluid used meets the permitted toxicity limits and is biodegradable, therefore there is no damage to the environment or to people.”
Environmental Organizations Again Turn To Justice
Despite the guarantees presented by Petrobras, environmental organizations advocate for the definitive stoppage of drilling in the Mouth of the Amazon. A new petition has been filed in the Federal Court of Amapá, requesting the cancellation of the environmental license granted to the state-owned company.
The document is signed by entities such as the Climate Observatory, Greenpeace, and WWF-Brazil, in addition to representatives of civil society. According to the group, the fluid leak represents a new fact that justifies the suspension of oil exploration activities in the Equatorial Margin.
“There is no oil exploration activity that is free of risks. Petrobras, no matter how qualified, is not immune to failures in its operations, which, in this case, may expose a sensitive and still little-known ecosystem to irreparable damage,” states a part of the petition.
Oil Exploration And Pressure On Future Decisions
As processes continue, pressure is mounting on regulatory and environmental agencies to define the next steps for oil exploration in the Mouth of the Amazon. The combination of technical requirements from the ANP, investigations by Ibama, and analyses by the MPF maintains a scenario of uncertainty.
With no forecast for the resumption of drilling, Petrobras now depends on full compliance with regulatory and environmental conditions. At the same time, legal actions reinforce the debate over the viability of oil exploration in areas considered strategic but environmentally sensitive, expanding the scope of the discussion beyond the technical and economic fields.

Não é na foz do Rio Amazonas a exploração de petróleo. Fica a 500km do local. O correto é falarmos em Margem Equatorial.
