Petrobras informed Broadcast that the deal has already been approved by the company’s board of directors and will aim to provide due diligence, inspection, oversight, and engineering services for Petrobras’s Production Station Unit Projects (platforms) under construction in that country.
You won’t believe the master move that Petrobras is planning! Petrobras will open an office in China later this year, marking its return to the Asian country after four years. This strategic move promises to revolutionize the way the company monitors its projects (construction of its platforms at Chinese shipyards) and strengthens ties with China, one of the main markets for Brazilian oil.
The state-owned company confirmed to Broadcast (the Group Estado real-time news system) that the deal has already been approved by the company’s board of directors. The objective is to provide due diligence, inspection, oversight, and engineering services for Petrobras’s Production Station Unit Projects (platforms) under construction in China.
Petrobras Approved New Implementation This Year
“Petrobras approved this year, through its board of directors, the establishment of a company in China. The implementation is underway according to a schedule that takes into account Petrobras’s internal processes and local legislation, with completion expected this year”, the company stated in an official note.

The intention to return to China was announced last December by the former CEO of the state company, Jean Paul Prates, as part of the company’s internationalization strategy. At the time, Prates stated that the new office would facilitate negotiations between Brazil and China, as well as closely monitor the construction projects of platforms in Chinese shipyards.
Company Has Previously Been in China
Petrobras previously had an office in China. In 2004, during the first term of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the company opened its representation in Chinese territory with the aim of increasing oil exports to the Asian country tenfold, which at that time represented only 1% of the approximately 200,000 barrels per day exported by the company. However, in 2019, during Jair Bolsonaro’s government, the office was closed.
Currently, China is the main destination for Petrobras’s oil exports. In the second quarter of this year, 50% of the state-owned company’s oil exports went to the Chinese market, representing about 300,000 barrels per day. This movement reinforces the strategic importance of China for Petrobras and for the Brazilian oil sector.
Petrobras Wants to Closely Monitor the Construction of Its Platforms
The reopening of the office in China will allow Petrobras to closely monitor the construction of its platforms at Chinese shipyards, ensuring greater quality control and efficiency in projects. Furthermore, it will strengthen commercial relations between the two countries, potentially opening new business opportunities and technological partnerships.
