The Company Plans To Make Significant Investments In Search Of New Oil Deposits In The Region Known As Equatorial Margin. The Petrobras Oil Drilling Exploration Project Has Been Targeted By Criticism From Environmental Organizations Across Brazil.
The state-owned company Petrobras is, this Tuesday (12/06), with an ambitious project for the future of the national oil and gas market. This involves a plan for the exploration and search for new oil wells in the so-called Equatorial Margin, a coastal strip that goes from Ceará to Amapá. The company will invest a total of R$ 15 billion in the exploration of wells in the region but has been strongly criticized regarding the possible environmental impacts resulting from this campaign.
Oil Well Exploration Project In The Equatorial Margin Is Petrobras’ Next Bet For The National Market, But Concern For Environmentalists
Over the past few years, Petrobras has been increasingly investing in the search for new oil and natural gas production areas in Brazil.
Not satisfied with the areas currently in operation in the country, the company announced an ambitious and controversial exploration campaign for the coming years.

Alert in the fuel market: Analysts and a former director of ANP warn that oil prices may worsen in the coming months due to global instability.
The Brazilian Equatorial Margin will be the target this time. This is because the state-run company will direct a total of R$ 15 billion in funds for the exploration of new oil wells in this region, aiming to obtain new deposits of the resource in the area.
The region became one of the company’s bets after the discovery of giant oil reserves in Guyana.
Thus, Petrobras intends to allocate an amount equivalent to what the company plans to spend on exploration in the Southeast and Colombia solely for the campaign to search for new reserves in this region of the national coast.
However, this project is not being well-received by everyone in the oil and gas sector. This is because several environmentalists across Brazil criticize the possible environmental damage that the company’s campaign could cause, including damage to reefs in the area of the Amazon River mouth.
Petrobras Receives Support From Representatives Of The Bolsonaro Government To Advance Oil Well Exploration Campaign In The Equatorial Margin
While environmentalists across the country criticize the state’s position regarding its relentless pursuit of new oil reserves in Brazil, the Bolsonaro Government aligns with the company’s ideals and has been supporting the project.
In recent weeks, the industry has received support from high-ranking government representatives from the Bolsonaro administration. During October, the Environment Minister, Joaquim Leite, defended that it is possible to explore oil in the region sustainably.
Just last Tuesday, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Adolfo Sachsida, stated that Brazil needs to explore its natural riches, as if it does not, other countries will.
Thus, with the support of the Bolsonaro Government to advance its well exploration campaign in the region, Petrobras will conduct a drilling test in the Equatorial Margin later this month.
The Director of Exploration and Production at Petrobras, Fernando Borges, stated that the entire team has high expectations regarding the possible oil reserves and the success of the initial test.
However, he acknowledged that this is a project in its early stages, so it is still not possible to outline a plan for the start of production, for example.
Thus, over the next few years, Petrobras will continue to invest in pre-salt exploration while searching for new sources of oil throughout the country.
