Petrobras Investigates Gas Leak That Halted Platform in Campos Basin, RJ, and Opened Investigation into the Incident.

Gas Leak Halts Petrobras Platform and Raises Alarm in the Oil and Gas Sector

Petrobras has opened an investigation to ascertain a gas leak that caused the complete shutdown of the platform P-40 on Thursday morning (18) in the Campos Basin, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

The incident occurred in one of the most strategic areas of the country’s Oil and Gas sector and led to an immediate production halt as a safety measure. According to initial information, there were no injuries.

The episode drew the attention of authorities, unions, and the market, especially due to the sensitive moment experienced by the unit, which operates with a contingency team. The state-owned company asserts that all protocols were followed and that the protection system worked correctly.

Union Demands Explanations from Petrobras About Leak

The Northern Fluminense Oil Workers Union (Sindipetro-NF) has publicized the case, is closely monitoring the situation, and demands clarifications from Petrobras. In addition, the entity stressed that a contingency team is operating the P-40 platform in place of regular workers who are on strike.

According to the union, the leak reinforces long-standing concerns about safety conditions in offshore units. In this context, the total production halt, although preventive, raised questions about the conduct of operations in a high-risk environment.

Criticism of Safety and Operation of the Platform

In a note, the coordinator of the Health Department of Sindipetro-NF, Alexandre Vieira, made strong criticisms of the state-owned company’s actions. For him, the episode exposes weaknesses in the model adopted by the company during the strike.

“It is yet another proof of Petrobras’ irresponsibility in operating platforms with contingency teams without knowing if they have the technical capacity for that. The company itself disregards safety regulations,” he stated.

The statement amplifies the debate on operational safety in the Oil and Gas sector, especially in older units that are considered critical for national production.

P-40 Platform Plays Strategic Role in Production

The P-40 platform began operating in 2001 and functions as a floating production, storage, and transfer unit for oil. Located in the Marlim Sul field, in the Campos Basin, the structure plays a strategic role in Petrobras’ production system.

Even with the advancement of new areas in the pre-salt, the Cambos Basin maintains its relevance to the Brazilian energy matrix. Therefore, any halt, even if temporary, causes operational impacts and draws attention from the sector.

Petrobras Confirms Shutdown and Details Protocols

When contacted, Petrobras confirmed the temporary interruption of production in P-40. According to the state-owned company, the protection system of the platform identified the gas leak and acted immediately, strictly following the safety protocols outlined.

As a preventive measure, all lines were depressurized, and production was halted. The company emphasized that this procedure is standard in risk situations and aims to preserve the integrity of workers and facilities.

Investigation to Be Conducted by Special Commission

Furthermore, Petrobras stated that it notifies the competent regulatory bodies and creates a special investigation commission to ascertain the causes of the leak. In this process, the company will evaluate the technical, operational, and human factors involved in the incident.

On the other hand, the state-owned company highlighted that the episode is not related to the strike of the workers. According to the company, the other platforms in the Campos Basin are operating normally, without impacting overall production.

Safety Returns to Center of Debate in the Oil and Gas Sector

The leak reignites the debate on safety, maintenance, and risk management in the Oil and Gas sector, especially in older platforms. Experts argue that, although automated systems have operated correctly, the operation of the unit requires a thorough analysis.

Meanwhile, the investigation should bring quick clarifications and drive corrective measures, ensuring the safe resumption of activities at the P-40 platform. In addition, unions, authorities, and the energy market are closely monitoring the case.
