In An Expansion Plan, Petrobras Aims To Deploy 11 New Oil Exploration Platforms In Campos And Santos Basins

Petrobras is outlining an ambitious expansion plan for oil exploration in the Brazilian pre-salt, with plans to install eleven new platforms in the Campos and Santos basins by 2027. With the pre-salt celebrating 15 years of production this month, Petrobras is renewing its commitment to this rich oil source, aligned with its growth strategy, according to Petronoticias.

As part of its Strategic Plan for the period 2023 to 2027, Petrobras allocated US$ 64 billion for investments in oil exploration and production, with 67% of these resources directed to the pre-salt. With projects already underway and new units planned, the company aims to reach a total production of 3.1 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed) by 2027. Of this estimate, 2.4 million boed will come from the pre-salt, representing an impressive 78% of total oil production. In terms of operated production, Petrobras and its partners aim to achieve 3.6 million boed in the pre-salt by 2027.

The Success Of Búzios And The Future Potential

The Búzios field, considered the largest in ultra-deep waters in the world, has been a significant highlight for Petrobras. In June, the field achieved cumulative production of 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe), an impressive feat accomplished in just five years since the start of its operation. Comparatively, the Marlim field, in the Campos Basin, took 11 years to reach the same milestone, and the Tupi field, in the pre-salt, took nine years. Currently, Búzios operates with five FPSO (Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading) units: P-74, P-75, P-76, P-77, and Almirante Barroso. The future looks promising, with six of the eleven new planned platforms destined for Búzios.

Expansion Beyond Santos And Campos

In addition to the Santos and Campos basins, the pre-salt continues its expansion into other areas. The Mero field, located in the Libra block in the Santos Basin, already has two FPSOs in operation and a third planned for the second half of 2023. The expectation is to install two more units by 2025, solidifying Mero’s position as the third largest oil field in Brazil.

The Jubarte field, in the Campos Basin, where pre-salt production began 15 years ago, is also slated to receive an FPSO in 2025. Meanwhile, Petrobras is revitalizing mature assets in the Campos Basin to expand its production capacity.

In summary, Petrobras celebrates 15 years of production in the pre-salt, highlighting the persistence and technical capability of its team and partners. The future looks bright, with ambitious expansion plans and a solid position in the oil production market.
