Dragon, Petrobras’ Supercomputer, With 200 TB of RAM, Starts Operations; Machine Will Be Destined for Exploration and Production Projects of the State-Owned Company
Petrobras announced yesterday (06/16), in a material fact, that it has started the operations of Dragon. The supercomputer from Brazil’s largest oil company makes its debut with 200 TB of RAM memory and power equivalent to four million smartphones or one hundred thousand notebooks. The assembly of Petrobras’ supercomputer was announced in December and lasted about three months. The state-owned company stated that it required ten trucks to transport all the parts of Dragon to its installation site. The machine weighs 20 tons and is divided into rows of eight to nine blocks, totaling 34 meters in length.
Operations began in early June. Dragon has 200 TB of RAM memory, a 100 Gb/s network, and millions of mathematical processors. According to the company, it surpasses other supercomputers of the state, such as Atlas and Fenix, and has the performance of four million mobile phones or one hundred thousand “modern laptops .”

Petrobras Starts Operations of Supercomputer Dragon
The device will be allocated to the company’s strategic projects. Among the initiatives are the EXP100 and PROD1000 programs, which aim to enhance the exploration and production business of the Brazilian state-owned company. Additionally, the machine improves geophysical data performance and reduces geological and operational risks.
“With the evolution of geophysical data processing capacity, we reduce the risk in E&P projects and can better size projects, which brings significant savings, and even better position wells, increasing the exploratory success rate,” said Fernando Borges, Petrobras’ Exploration and Production Director.
According to Nicolás Simone, Director of Digital Transformation and Innovation, Dragon continues the strategy to ensure “greater cost-effectiveness, agility, safety, and resilience” for the state-owned company’s operations. The executive also noted that nine supercomputers have been put into operation in about two years.
“We expect to reach the end of 2021 with around 40 petaflops of capacity, not counting cloud usage,” he concluded.
