Aiming To Bring More Modernization To Its Operations And Provide An Even More Efficient Data Transmission, Petrobras Is Planning To Install 5G Technology In About 29 Oil Production Platforms By 2024.
The oil and natural gas company Petrobras is focusing on modernizing its operations, with an emphasis on data transmission and production monitoring systems, for the coming years. By the end of 2024, the state-owned company expects to install 5G technology in about 29 oil production platforms in the Campos and Santos basins, boosting the good results of Brazilian assets.
29 Oil Production Platforms In The Santos And Campos Basins Of Petrobras Will Have 5G Internet Technology By The End Of 2024
By the end of 2024, the oil and natural gas company Petrobras intends to focus on installing 5G internet technology and data transmission in 29 production platforms in the Campos and Santos basins, and in 17 onshore units (including refineries, gas treatment units, ports, among others). This is another modernization initiative of the state-owned company in the Brazilian oil and gas market over the next few years.
To achieve this, 5G technology on oil production platforms will bring more efficiency in data transmission speed, enhancing remote operations and real-time monitoring technologies in confined environments, as well as leveraging augmented reality.

Petrobras implements a severe adjustment and confirms a 55% increase in the price of aviation kerosene with a proposal for installment payments for the companies.
The advancements may enable, with the training of the company’s workforce, greater control and productivity in oil and natural gas production at Petrobras’s assets in Brazil.
With the ongoing implementation of LTE (Long Term Evolution) 4G private network projects for oil production, Petrobras has already observed positive results from the modernization process.
Now, 5G technology will be the next step for the state-owned company to improve the Brazilian oil and natural gas sector. In addition to onshore oil production platforms, the company also plans to implement 5G technology in mobile units, such as drill rigs, Maintenance and Service Units (UMS), and support vessels, ensuring modernization across various operational areas.
Petrobras Is Now Investing In Fiber Optic Infrastructure For The Implementation Of 5G Technology In Its Oil Production Platforms In Brazil
For the installation of 5G technology in oil and natural gas production platforms in the country, Petrobras plans to invest in a strong fiber optic infrastructure that will be laid over more than 1600 km, throughout the Campos and Santos basins.
The installation works for the fiber optic to support 5G technology have already begun, with the project starting from Praia Grande, on the coast of São Paulo, and projections for completion by the end of 2023.
As for the oil projects on land, Petrobras plans to install 5G technology in 17 units under its operation, which include refineries, Gas Treatment Units (UTGs), thermoelectric plants, ports, warehouses, corporate environments, in addition to its Research and Innovation Center (Cenpes).
The main objective of the technology in onshore units is to enable better quality in remote control of fuel production in the country.
Thus, Petrobras will not only ensure better data transmission quality but also have the opportunity to control its fuel exploration platforms with even greater efficiency, thanks to the benefits of using 5G internet technology.
