Petrobras CGOR Conducts Seabed Rock Studies to Discover and Produce Oil Supporting Well Drilling Linked to the Campos Basin Revitalization Plan

Acting in well construction, collecting and describing rock cuttings brought to the surface by the injected fluid (mud), and characterizing the properties of rocks. These are just a few steps in the process of identifying oil in a well for extraction, carried out by the Geological Remote Operation and Automation Center (CGOR), located at the Imbetiba Base in Macaé and inaugurated this month by Petrobras.

The CGOR is one of the company’s structures that supports well drilling linked to the Campos Basin Revitalization Plan, which received an investment of US$ 16 billion as part of Petrobras’ Strategic Plan (PE 2022-2026).

CGOR Served About 115 Wells and Already 242 Thousand Hours Less Human Exposure to Risk in the Offshore Environment.

The company has sought ways to reduce the workforce on board to achieve various objectives, and this work intensified during the pandemic due to the necessary reduction in the number of workers on rigs and the consequent decrease in the number of flights for deployments. As a result, from 2020 until today, CGOR has supported 115 oil wells and already logged 242 thousand hours less human exposure to risk in the offshore environment.

Due to the emissions from avoided flights and non-downtime hours for the rig, R$ 93 million was saved (2020-2022), and the gains in climate resilience became more tangible, with a reduction of 3,879.8 tons of carbon emitted from 2021 until today — this would be equivalent to approximately eight return flights (Boeing 737-800) from Rio de Janeiro to Portugal or the planting of 77 thousand trees for CO2 capture.

Geological Data

The Acquisition of Geological Data occurs in all wells being drilled — exploratory or production development. Therefore, the CGOR can assist any well drilled in Brazil or abroad, as long as Petrobras is the operator and after evaluating the applicability of the methods, taking into account a variety of factors, from infrastructure to risk analysis.

The mudlogging, MWD/LWD, directional, and wireline profiling lines refer to some of the essential services during the drilling of an oil well — fundamental not only to assist in this operation but also to acquire geological data that will allow the interpretation of the types of rocks being drilled and to indicate where the oil is located.
