Petrobras Plans to Invest Up to R$ 3.5 Billion to Complete UFN-III in Três Lagoas, Highlighting the Importance of Fertilizers for Agribusiness.
The Petrobras will make a massive investment of R$ 3.5 billion to complete the works of the Nitrogen Fertilizer Unit (UFN-III), located in Três Lagoas, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The information was disclosed by William França, Executive Director of Industrial Processes and Products of the state-owned company, during an oil and gas congress. The investment is seen as a crucial measure for the completion of the project, which is currently 85% finalized.
Resuming Petrobras Works and Strategic Planning
The expectation is that the resumption of UFN-III works will be incorporated into Petrobras’ next Strategic Plan, which will cover the period from 2025 to 2029.
This decision reflects a commitment from the company to expand its production capacity in the fertilizer sector, essential to meet the growing demand of Brazilian agribusiness.

William França explained that Petrobras is finalizing a detailed analysis of what still needs to be done to complete the unit.
He highlighted that the company is conducting a technical and economic feasibility study (EVTE) to assess the financial viability of the project.
“We are finishing the ‘due diligence’ of what is left to be done in the project so that we can run the EVTE again,” França stated. This analysis is essential for Petrobras to give the green light for the next steps in the investment in the plant.
The Importance of the Fertilizer Plant
The construction of UFN-III is an important step for Petrobras, especially in a context where Brazil heavily relies on fertilizer imports to sustain its agricultural production.
The plant, once completed, is expected to increase the supply of nitrogen fertilizers in the domestic market, contributing to the self-sufficiency of the country in this strategic sector.
Fertilizers are essential for agricultural cultivation, and a lack of inputs can directly impact farmers’ productivity.
Thus, Petrobras’ investment in UFN-III represents not only a business opportunity for the state-owned company but also vital support for food security in Brazil.
New Opportunities with Renewable Fuels
In addition to the investment in fertilizers, William França also mentioned new possibilities that Petrobras is considering.
He spoke about the production of aviation fuel from ethanol, known as ATJ (Alcohol to Jet Fuel).
This initiative may open new paths for the company, leveraging the abundance of available raw materials, such as sugarcane alcohol and corn alcohol.
França stated that this production could generate synergies with the company’s refineries, improving productivity.
However, he emphasized that despite the potential, there are still no concrete definitions regarding the location or timelines for any projects related to this new fuel.
“Alcohol as a raw material is not a problem. The issue is the necessary infrastructure, which may require, for example, pipelines,” the director highlighted.
