Petrobras Decides to Concentrate Its Aerial Operations, Optimizing Logistics for One of the Largest Pre-Salt Fields in Brazil. The Change Represents Time Savings and Increased Efficiency in Operations.
An apparently simple change, but one that promises to transform the logistics of one of Brazil’s largest oil fields, is happening in the heart of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
The giant Petrobras, which operates in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin, has made a strategic decision aimed at optimizing its operations and employee transportation.
According to information from Petrobras, the company decided in the last week of August to centralize its aerial operations for the Búzios field at Maricá Airport, located on the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Gasoline prices soar and the question arises: is ethanol more advantageous? The 70% rule reveals the limit with gasoline.
Previously, flights serving the Búzios field departed from Cabo Frio, a city further away from the capital.
The move to Maricá, according to the company, represents a significant logistical optimization, as the city’s airport is much closer to the operational base of the Búzios field. As a result, Petrobras predicts up to two hours of savings in the transportation of its workers.
This decision may seem simple, but time savings are crucial for an operation as large-scale as Petrobras in the pre-salt. The measure aims not only to reduce costs but also to speed up service to the drilling rigs and maintenance units operating in the field, which can directly impact the company’s efficiency and productivity.
Growth and Potential at Maricá Airport
As operations were being transferred, Maricá Airport, which previously played a secondary role, gained importance and now ranks as the third largest in passenger movement for Petrobras, behind only the heliports in Farol de São Tomé, in Campos dos Goytacazes, and in Jacarepaguá, in the capital.
This new flow of operations promises to strengthen Maricá’s airport infrastructure and increase its significance on the logistical map of the oil and gas sector.
Currently, Maricá Airport operates with ten aircraft and conducts about 536 monthly flights, transporting an impressive volume of people and small loads to the Búzios field.
In total, there are 13,500 slots available monthly to meet Petrobras’s demand, an operation that not only facilitates the transportation of workers but also improves the flow of materials necessary for the maintenance and safety of the platforms.
The Arrival of FPSO Almirante Tamandaré
And the news doesn’t stop there. According to Petrobras, the Búzios field will still receive the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré this year, which will further expand operations in the area.
This floating unit for oil and gas production will have a production capacity of 225 thousand barrels of oil per day and approximately 180 workers on board.
The commissioning of this sixth production unit at the Búzios field will not only increase Petrobras’s production capacity but will also demand even greater efficiency in the transportation of personnel and equipment.
This movement in the Búzios field is just another chapter in Petrobras’s strategy to optimize its operational processes and increase competitiveness in a vital area for the Brazilian economy.
The centralization of operations at Maricá Airport proves to be an intelligent logistical move, taking full advantage of the geographical and structural advantages of the region.
Challenges and Opportunities on the Horizon
While the consolidation at Maricá Airport brings numerous benefits, it also presents challenges.
The increase in flight and passenger volume demands a expansion of the airport’s capacity and improvements in infrastructure, especially in terms of security and efficiency of airport services.
This rapid growth also requires the modernization of operational and air traffic control processes, something that is already on the radar of municipal and state authorities.
Moreover, as reported by industry experts, this concentration of operations may also impact air and road traffic flow in the region, which will require investments in urban mobility to keep up with the increased demand.
The Impact on the Local Scenario and Its Importance for Petrobras
For Maricá, this movement by Petrobras brings not only economic gains but also an increase in the city’s visibility as a strategic point in the oil and gas sector.
The expansion of aerial operations can mean new investments in the city, generating jobs and income for the local population, as well as opening doors for the development of new businesses linked to the oil and gas chain.
By consolidating its aerial operations at the city’s airport, Petrobras demonstrates that it is always seeking more efficient and agile solutions to maintain its dominance in the global energy market.
The Búzios field, one of the largest in the world, is essential to the state-owned company’s long-term strategy, and optimizing logistics may be the necessary differential to ensure the company’s competitiveness in an increasingly dynamic and demanding market.
